The beginning of spring is not always determined by fixed calendar dates. The phenological or ecological definition of spring relates to biological indicators; the blossoming of a range of plant species, and the activities of animals, or the special smell of soil that has reached the temperature for micro flora to flourish. It therefore varies according to the climate and according to the specific weather of a particular year. Most ecologists divide the year into six seasons that have no fixed dates. In addition to spring, ecological reckoning identifies an earlier separate prevernal (early or pre-spring) season between the hibernal (winter) and vernal (spring) seasons. This is a time when only the hardiest flowers like the crocus are in bloom, sometimes while there is still some snowcover on the ground.[10] :D:D

    eat that.

Ah here, it's half 6 in the morning, I can barely get down a breakfast, never mind trying to digest all that!

Anyway aren't daffodils supposed to be making an appearance fairly soon? Though the weather we've been having lately I wouldn't be surprised if they did the sensible thing and stayed under for another while!

My tulip shoots, hyacinth buds and daffodil shoots have been up since December. I can see some of the flowers on the hyacinths already:confused: Now I'm gonna have to plant a lot more bulbs or the garden will be bare in a few months.

I thought, there is only two seasons in Ireland: Summer (1 week in the end of May or early June) and Winter (the remainder of the year) :pac:

It's not Le it's 'le - the little dash before the L stands for the fhéi. It's used to reflect how it's spoken.;)

    About the Spring thing.

If today was the 1st day of Spring the seasons are:

    Feb, March, April, Spring
    May June, July Summer
    August, Sep, Oct Autumn

Makes no sense as it means that the peak summer holiday time, August, is in fact Autumn.

This 1st February , first day of Spring thing only exists in Ireland and I think it's the aincient equivalent of a twitter rumour.

Seasons go with the lunar cycle, so March 21st is the approximate start of Spring.

I've always thought that to. So if June 21st is midsummer that means summer is May June July. It's disputed quite often in this country and many people sub May for August.

Spring starts on Lá 'le Bríde, Feb. 1st in Ireland.

    March 1st in the U.K.

But hey! we have to follow our superior neighbours in everything.

You can use other dates based on climate, weather, crop growth, bird nesting frog spawning or whatever takes your fancy.

Imbolg fé shéin is fé mhaise dhaoibh go léir, a chairde phágánaigh.

How can it be Spring here officially if its also Groundhog Day to see if Spring will come early or not?

So that means it's still winter.

Irish schools seem to be the only place that teach the following:

    Spring: February, March, April
    Summer: May, June, July
    Autumn: August, September, October
    Winter: November, December, January

Everywhere else in the northern hemisphere (including Met Éireann) say:

    Spring: March, April, May
    Summer: June, July, August
    Autumn: September, October, November
    Winter: December, January, February
The change from winter to spring or from summer to autumn is gradual and the general trend is subject to reversals which may last for a week or more. For Climatological purposes, on the basis of air temperature, seasons are regarded as three-month periods as follows: December to February - winter, March to May - spring, June to August- summer and September to November - autumn. This is a common grouping in the meteorological practice of many countries in the middle and northern latitudes.

I'd say they're right and we're wrong. Wouldn't be the first time that schools taught something incorrectly.
