Well, should we really be surprised. The poor ridiculous sentences being given to dangerous criminals, the closure of Garda stations and the below story is proof to me that not only has the financial problems afftected our healthcare system, clearly their is an appetite to cut back on justice itself in this country in order save as much money as possible.

"Latest figures from the Irish Prison Service show that there are 128 prisoners currently at-large from the country's open prisons, including one who was sentenced for murder.

The figures, released to RTÉ News under the Freedom of Information Act, also show four others, who were imprisoned for dangerous driving causing death, are also at-large.

103 of the at-large prisoners are from Loughan House and 25 are from Shelton Abbey. 33 of those were sentenced after robbery or theft convictions, while 23 were imprisoned for motoring offences, including those for dangerous driving causing death.

Out of the 128 prisoners unlawfully at-large, 78 of them absconded from the prisons while the rest are deemed to be at-large for failing to comply with conditions of their temporary release.
The Department of Justice said Gardaí are informed when prisoners escape and they have the power to detain, arrest and return such persons to prison.
They said there is ongoing contact between the authorities on the issue".

Considering they absconded from open prisons, I think I'll sleep soundly in my bed with no fear at all of having my throat slit in the dark night.

Why, are you saying this should be in no way alarming as it is an open prison?

What even is an open prison?

Is it like the kind of prison were prisoners can just walk off when they feel like it?

Splendid idea to build a prison a mile or two from the border. Run fast enough and you can get to Northern Ireland. It's nice to see that such a quaint custom as sanctuary is alive and well, when so many other old practices are dying out.

I always thought open prisons were there for non dangerous inmates i.e. drink drivers/tax evaders and the like. How does a murdered get sent to an open prison?
