howya stan .. yeah i signed upfor the ho/fr pack of 25 for this spring .. i used to use a bigger number when herd fertility was poorer but lately have been well covered with 25 straws on 90 cows . the resulting heifers can be a mixed bag but overall their not dis-improving the herd (ebi 139)

i got a call from icbf about making info available on 4 cows to ai companies with aview to a specific mating for each .
thats the first ive ever heard of this ..does any one have any experience ????

Not too sure to be honest but am sure one has lord lilly and mountbeech blackstar back a bit and the second has fatal and either hairy breiz or gmi.Lord lilly and hairy breiz have been some of the best cows ive had and their offspring which have gmi and oman blood lines have carried that tradition. The 3 calves they want to genotype might ammount to nothing but if they want to buy them ill be looking at a sale price of 7 to 12 k per calf

Never heard of this before! Just read up about it here http://www.icbf.com/services/geneireland/dairy/index.php .What are the bulls in the pack like, will they have an EBI similar to the top Bulls out there now (280-300?), but just not as reliable? Also, it says on that that you need to use it on cows with an EBI over 120, that still the case for 2013, or has it gone up?

just looked at the list. whats the point of a bull like GMJ(fr) being on it.
his EBI is only 48 and is only +1.3% solids. some very good holstein bulls and jerseys though

Not the full picture PMU. NZ genetics are really starting to dominate all bull listings, even looking through the progressive catalogue most of the top EBI bulls are from NZ genetics.

as far as i know... these are test bulls... id be thinking get in touch with the icbf to find out more...

could be wrong here but this is how bulls were chosen for AI catalogues before genomics came along in 09....

thats exactly it.. before individual ai companies had their own mini versions but gene ireland is their united effort in daughter proving heifers...

genomic info is a big addition to this scheme as it should raise the quality of bulls that initally are offered for proving and wean out the duds early on... thats the theory anyway but then if genomics is that good an indicator should there be a need for a bull proving program at all?:P:P

I know, I am using them myself, its just that i dont see why that bull is on a test team. his pedigree shows nothing on the dam side

Gene Ireland showed an interest in 6 bull calves last year. 2 were heifs 4 bulls send hair samples but none came up to snuff. The thing that pissed me off was that they left it for 6 weeks to contact us so had to test 4 bull calves to sell them, felt badly treated.
We have 5 that companies are interested in but we signed with Dovea who guarantee a 4 week turn around. They are offering €7000 for qualifying calf, half paid upfront and remainder post IBR test. I would advise anyone signing with a company get an assurance re. how long you will need to keep calf. Most don't make the grade but I think all the companies are trying to hold as many bulls as possible!

each company is allowed to put in they're own bulls and the EBI's if i'm correct may not be based only on genomic evaluation, there is missing information on this bull and this may effect his EBI, but i fully agree with you why would anyone use him.
