Wierd CPU fan behaviour

    Hey guys,

My current CPU cooler fan has decided to die after many a moon of faithful service. Given how old my CPU is at this point I just got a replacement of the same model.

    What I have is:

The only difference between the existing fan and the new one (despite being the same make & model) are:
    • 0.16v (old) vs. 0.22v (new)
    • 3-pin (old) vs. 4-pin (new)

The new fan will spin briefly when the PC is powered on, and then stops turning. I tried the fan with a machine in work and again, same general behaviour, albeit the fan spun a bit more enthusiastically and then stopped turning. When I say "stopped" I mean "stopped.".

Given the similar behaviour between machines I don't think it's an issue of PSU degradation. Considering that perhaps the 4th pin on my motherboard was a dud or some such, I have also popped the pin connector on the fan, but, again, got the same behaviour.

Any ideas as to why the fan could be doing this?

    New one has PWM.

Try going into the bios and checking the fan settings. If its like my asus board then it's a subsection of hardware.

Still no go ED E. The BIOS (rev 0903) has Q-Fan settings for both CPU & Chassis. I had them disabled, so enabled Q-Fan for the CPU, and set it to "Performance" (out of three options; performance, optimal, and silent).

The fan did its initial "twitch" on start-up and then spun, albeit at a really low RPM level (192rpm, which is way below the default threshold of 800rpm).

It did that once. Every subsequent time I have restarted, the fan refuses to do anything other than twitch.

It may well be a dud, its a cheap enough fan on a cheapish cooler, not outside the realms of possibility.

Is the PC booting? There is usually a safety feature on the mobo where if no cpu fan is detected it wont boot. Could be a detection issue(higher power draw on the new fan).

Try spinning it by hand just as you boot it, if its half spun up when the board tests it she may just post. If not, RMA it.

Just to follow up on this: I ordered a replacement fan from Arctic Cooling just to check if it was the fan or some other component acting up. Replacement spooled up straight off the bat, so turns out it was a duff fan that came with the original replacement.

I'll pack that back off to the shop I ordered it from off amazon. Cheers for the help guys!
