Could Motorcheck.ie, Cartell.ie and Mywheels.ie all be this wrong

I viewed a car. It all seemed to stack up. Owner seemed legit. It had 80k miles on the clock and he told me he was the 2nd owner.

Later...a Motorcheck.ie report suggested he was the 8th owner and that this time last year there was 133k miles on the clock. (they had 5 different mileage readings over a 2 year period climbing up to 133k) I then ran the same registration (the correct one) on Cartell.ie and mywheels.ie. They reported the same discrepancies, however one of them reported one less owner, 7.

The current owner professes he is honest. Am I correct in assuming that the information he is giving me is wrong. Is there any way he could be right?
Obviously I have walked away from this car, but wondered if there could be more than one explanation?

Service history where you can call around and check their systems? A lad who owned a car I went to view told me he had it a few months as his daily but MotorCheck and the motor tax office records said he had it a month and lied through his teeth.

That being said there was also an issue with Motorcheck identifying that car as a 6-speed SSG but it was a 5-speed manual. I reckon the tax/previous owners data to be fairly accurate though. The log book will have the number of previous Irish owners on it, section J.1 I think.

I'd believe him. Millions wouldn't, but I do.

Ask him when he bought it, then ask to look at the VLC. The VLC has the date of the last owners registration plus the correct address. If the address is wrong and the dates dont match. WALK, WALK FAST

Also, look on the motortax.ie website, it shows if the car was issued a new VLC in the last 3 months under the section "vehicle transaction enquiry".

Unfortunately I never got to see the logbook, as he met outside his local pub.
Obviously I would have looked for it on 2nd viewing at his home before making the purchase.
But having run the checks before I went for a second look and to collect the car, I wasn't then going to make a 45 min trip just to satisfy my curiosity of how it would play out.

I haven't viewed many cars, but I now realise that I should only meet sellers at their homes and probably check the VLC and service history before even looking at the car.

Could it be that the sites are showing a km value instead of miles? Someone could have possibly input the km value by mistake instead of miles

It's possible of course. The sites are certainly saying miles as the km value is there too and is well over 200km. There are 6 different mileage entries over a 2 year period, so less likely that it was one off human mixup between miles and km.

Unless the km value kept getting input everytime although 80k miles is only 127k km so still wouldnt seem to add up

Checking the motortax.ie website has just saved me a TON of hassle.
Guy said he'd had it a few months, did a quick check on the tax site that showed the most recent log book was issued on 31st Jan, motorcheck.ie said similar.
Called him back and said it, he hung up and hasn't answered me since.

    Close call, thanks guys!

I think this motorcheck is a waste of time, I bought a car brand new in 2004, sold it in 2015, never crashed or damaged, no warranty work, absolutely clean car and just for the laugh I done the free check. It showed something like 57 pieces of information, total bull****e designed to frighten someone into paying for the full report before they buy. I contacted them and only got more bull****e!! Don't waste money on these nonsense sites, get a mechanic to look at the car and get real and valuable information!!
