According to RTE News...Waterford and Athlone stores could be about to close up.

Airside has been closing early for months now......(cost cutting and lack of trade, according to a store employee) and recently theres barely any customers in the store.

Every time I have been out in Airside over the last 2 months or so,its been like a ghost town.

Sign of the times perhaps,as people get squeezed more and more by unfair and unjust austerity

Enda Kennys plan for this country is really working well...isnt it??????

Woddies and Atlantic are part of the Grafyon group, they simply shut Atlantic down it didnt go t*ts up, Grafton are also closing some of their Chadwicks branches as well.

They want €2.99 for a 300gm bag of seed spuds in Woodies, can't say I'd cry over them too much.

    2.25kg/2.5kg bags online for €5/6.

Think they are profitable, just looking for a rent reduction. They were talking about it on the Last Word today. It seems Atlantic Homecare had a 40% reduction in there rents last year so this crowd want the same.

B&Q are odd... they are extremely overpriced for some things (sawn timber) but can be great value (cheaper than building providers) for others.

I would miss it if they were to shut down, great selection compared to woodies or homebase.

Chadwicks in Glasnevin was shut down and the staff there merged in with Chadwicks in Coolock.;)

Woodies beside then knocked through into that old Chadwicks bulding and made it a bigger Woodies in Glasnevin.

Their prices for the likes of cement (buy 5 or more bags) and postcrete is very good.

3 euro for a 20kg bag of postcrete is pretty good allright.:)

Online, online, online, that is where they are all heading, but screwfix has the jump on them, no doubt it will even out but by then screwfix will have it shelled, that is all.

Is Screwfix not owned by the same bigger company that also owns B&Q

KINGFISHER..and they also own some chinese retail shops and also spanish retail/diyshops too.

I spoke to a very high up/important person in B&Q Ireland during a meeting with him a few months back.
I told him that he needed to get a B&Q IRELAND Website up and running...as thats what customers are looking for.

    Its yet to happen.

This is true, but screwfix was the lap dance, never going to happen, now they are dancing to no music, they deliver on time and if they do not have it (whatever you are looking for) they will point you to somewhere you can get it, TOP service, they are not afraid of the competition, (scar face would be proud) that is all.

Are Screwfix in Ireland or just shipping from the UK?

Shipping from the where ever you are, meaning, they do not discount a sale, there will be or will not be delivery charges depending on the size of the order, no cloak and dagger, all up front, that is all.

There is certain business that just cannot wholey translate over to online. And this sector is one. This cannot be compared to the likes of HMV. Most of the business in this sector is obviously sunday and saturday DIYers who like to browse the shop and tend to get stuff last minute.

The do not plan ahead and order online to wait for delivery. It doesnt translate well for the sector.

Screwfix is directed at prepared individuals and independent operators who order ahead of time.

Im talking about an actual propper Irish website with product lists and that are for sale in B&Q here in Ireland.

Not just a website with an Irish store locator. That was allready in place at the time of my meeting with B&Q.

We (myself and the B&Q head man) discussed this matter at some length over lunch and the plan was and is to try and get a propper Irish website up and running.

    RTE News at the moment.......

Enda Kenny hopes jobs can be saved at B&Q.

Supposedly 90 jobs are under threat in B&Q.

Kenny says he will move HEAVEN AND EARTH to save jobs in this country and create jobs too.

What a load of horseshyte and just a PR suck up stunt by Kenny for the TV cameras.

Typical FG shyte talk as per usual..:mad:

Charity begins at Home Mr Kenny and not over in Germany playing as Merkils little Poodle.

Wouldn't call that a website. I' say more of a holding page.
They need to have products displayed with Euro prices that allow you to order online

B&Q Athlone has been saved from closure and will keep on trading as normal/as usual.

Good news for the 45 employees of B&Q Athlone.:)

Didnt see Enda Kenny or Richard Bruton on the TV jumping up and down to announce/hail this though...:pac::pac::rolleyes:

That's good news for Athlone, bought some stuff from them up and down and always liked the selection on offer.

Good news, we'd be worse off without them.

I quite like their policy of hiring older staff. It was a nice surprise that the bods walking around on the floor in my local B&Q seem to have an interest in DIY and know what they're on about.
