They were, but you can't test positive for a drug if it's already cleared your system.

This might belong in the other thread, not sure.....
So, if the window for, say, EPO clearing the system is x number of days and you can't test positive for it once its cleared, is there actually a practical solution to the doping issue ? Does this mean that consistent, methodical micro dosing would be essentially undetectable apart from bad luck ? I mean, I know the bio passport is supposed to counter this but if someone was being very careful it would seem (to my uneducated mind !) to be reasonably "easy" to beat the system if you were tracking your own values...?
I dunno, maybe I'm thinking about it too much ! Probably a moot point as it goes for all sports too, not just cycling I suppose.

The bio passport is meant to address that, i.e. test for the effects of EPO or transfusions rather than test for them directly. In theory yes, you can manage your profile, but attempting to make it appear natural will mean that any doping you do will have limited effects and any mistakes could put you on the block.

so in theory cyclists can still dope and get away with it...how many days does it take epo to clear your system?

At one time Armstrong was taking so much EPO that his body shut down all natural production, so if you're attempting to maintain completely natural-looking but competitively high blood values you would need to be taking it on a very regular basis and that massively increases the risk of detection.

Also, if you bump up your values enough to make yourself competitive, you attract greater testing frequency.

Nothing chocking really in him admitting doping, but what sticks out in this is that even after coming back with Christina watches he was still on the sauce, FFS!!! That just shows how little fear he had of getting pinged - and he must have known that they would single him out for testing post-comeback

Once a drug cheat, always a drug cheat......................and Armstrong rode the 2009 & 2010 tours clean, yeah, sure

As Vladimir Kurtains mentioned, the bio passport is meant to flag the result of doping, which makes perfect sense. However as you are not detecting a specific drug, the burden of proof seems to be very high, presumably to avoid lots of appeals to CAS.

For instance in the 2010 TdF, l'Equipe published a list of riders in the race and their index of suspicion based on WADA analysis of their bio passport. The index went from 1/10 to 10/10. Lots of the names in the 8/10 and up have kept appearing in relation to doping but afaik very few have been banned for doping.

So it seems to me that the UCI and WADA know who is doping but unless the riders go way over the top on their "program", they get away with it
