Would be grateful for an early reply - do I need a USA visa if flying Dublin, Chicago, Toronto?

Yes and No, you don't need a visa but what you do need is ESTA approval. It costs $14 and can be done online. 'VWP' below stands for 'Visa Waiver Program', a facility available to people from certain countries which includes Ireland. ESTA approval is required in order to present yourself to a US Immigration agent, you don't need to print off anything, just have your passport and credit card at the ready and apply on this website.....

Expect to be approved immediately and the approval is valid for two years or when your passport expires, whichever occurs first. That means it will cover you for more trips to the US i.e. as long as the ESTA is current you don't have to apply again for future trips to the US, it is a multi-entry approval.

Q: Do nationals or citizens of countries that participate in the VWP require an ESTA if they are only transiting the United States en route to another country?

A: Yes. Eligible nationals or citizens of countries that participate in the VWP require either an ESTA or a visa to transit the United States. If a traveler is only planning to transit through the United States en route to another country, when he or she completes the ESTA application, the traveler should enter the words "In Transit" and his or her final destination in the address lines under the heading “Address While In The United States.”
