Hi, does anyone know of a recovery company that could help with the above problems? I'm based around Dublin 15. My replacement is also punctured, so preferably I'd like a new tyre. Also would be handy if they could come out after 6 in the evening.

Battery charger, jerrycan, take the wheel off and brimg it down the local petrol station and pump it up. Half the price of getting a breakdown van out!!

How far is the nearest garage?

Around a mile or so, I suppose I could get a lift to get the petrol. But the wheel needs to be changed on the spot.

Get a lift to the petrol station and bring the flat tyre with you when you go. Drop in to any tyre place (http://www.discounttyres.ie/map.html) and get them to mend the puncture. Now depending on how flat your battery is, you might be able to jump it off the car you have just gotten a lift in to get your jerry can of petrol and tyre fixed, or you may need a new battery. I'd attempt the jumping thing at first before then deciding on whether you need to buy a new battery and fit it, or call a tow truck to get it brought somewhere to do the same.

Sure while your gettin a lift to get petrol bring the punchered wheel in the boot and sort that too, just make sure to put a block or timber under the car or even stick the spare on instead of leaving it up on the jack while your not there

Thanks for the advice, wasn't thinking. I'm going to cycle to get the spare tyre fixed, while that's getting fixed then cycle to get petrol. Then I'll call the break down on my insurance to jump the car. Then I'll bring the car for a drive for an hour or two.

If you don't have a spare wheel, or even a doughnut, borrow a spare wheel from someone and put that on while you're away getting petrol and the puncture fixed.

Cycle with the spare wheel? I've been cycling 17 years and carried many strange items but a spare wheel is heavy...and awkward to carry. Especially if your juggling a jerry can too?

Think I could be in luck my friend might have a spare. Does anyone know what size tyre a 05 megane takes?

It's written on the tyre. Charge up the battery, don't just jump it and drive it for an hour or two, modern alternators don't like charging flat batteries, they die, they like topping up slightly and then just providing current for consumption as it arises. Newer alternators are not like the old ones which would happily churn out current and "bring up" a flat battery. The fastest way to kill an 03ish onwards alternator is to go for a good spin around to charge the battery. If you've an 06ish car, it won't even do it.
