    Hi guys,

I'm from Belfast, but have just accepted a job in the lovely Tallaght starting in mid-Feb.

I'm not keen on living in Tallafornia, mind you! Ideally I would hope to get the Luas to work, rather than driving because a) I hate driving and am a nervy driver, and b) I hear Dublin is a nightmare to drive through at rush-hour. So I've been looking to do a house-share somewhere along the red line.

The problem of course with the red line is that a lot of the areas are quite dodgy, and as a young female who doesn't know Dublin very well, I'm anxious about that.

I've been looking around Smithfield/lower Phoenix park/Heuston station and upper Kilmainham areas. Does anyone have any advice on this? Would you extend your search further and if so, where?

One big problem I've found with Dublin which I've never experienced anywhere else (I've lived in Belfast and various parts of England and Wales), is how hard it is to actually get a room! I've viewed a few places, and the process seems to be that rather than the tenant coming, deciding and agreeing to let the room, and that being it all sorted, in Dublin the current housemates let EVERYBODY view it and have a mini-interview and then pick their favourite person based on your 10 minutes together. Bit odd and high-pressure and yeah...

    Help!!

You could consider living along the bus routes to tallaght. Templeogue is a middle class suburb close to Tallaght. Terenure is an upmarket suburb between Templeogue and the City Centre. Harolds Cross is a traditional flatland area between Terenure and the City. All are on bus routes to Tallaght.

I would go with Smithfield/Stoneybatter, I live around here and I haven't experienced any problems. You do see dodgy looking folk alright, but they are generally too out of it to pay you attention.

Ooh I hadn't thought about living along the bus route, I'll definitely look into that, thanks!

As for living in Tallaght itself, well, I've always wanted to live in Dublin since I was a wee girl and kind of want to go for that - not necessarily city centre, but somewhere close enough to it. Tallaght doesn't really feel like Dublin anymore, as it's its own wee city in itself.

Kilmainham and Islandbridge are really nice area's and close enough to enjoy the city center from a safe distance :D

+1 Smithfield/Stoneybatter that area is getting better and better.

If you are not interested in living around tallaght then i wouldnt bother what so ever with templeogue or rathfarnham suburb feel.

If you wanted to live in Dublin, then id go with living in Dublin (stoneybatter) was mentioned above.

    Best of luck OP.

Depends what you like. Kilmainham is near Phoenix Park and the Liffey walk, and has a thriving Arts Club, and the Patriot Inn is good for gigs. It's on the Luas, it's walkable to town, taxi from city centre will be cheap enough.

65 Bus goes to Tallaght from town, passes through Templeogue, Terenure, Rathgar and Rathmines.

    What part of Tallaght?

The 49 and 54a go from the City centre through Clanbrassil Street, Harolds's cross, Terenure etc.

You could live in Dublin 8, Harold's Cross, Portobello, Rathmines, all good places, pretty buzzy, in the city.

Smithfield, Stoneybatter or the East part of D8 sound like they'd do the job for ye OP.

All walkable from the city center and commutable to/from Tallaght on the Luas

Thanks guys, this has been really helpful. I was starting to despair when my small search radius wasn't resulting in many decent properties.

I'll be working the the Square shopping centre, so yeah, super handy for Luas. I'm not sure how many buses just go to Tallaght in general, and which go directly to the square?

The 27 and 77A are frequent bus routes from The Square and pass through Walkinstown which is a quiet enough area.

The 49 and 54A also serve The Square serving Harolds Cross which is a bit closer to the city centre.

If you're looking for somewhere on the Luas Line I'd recommend Smithfield. It's close to the city centre and about a 40 minute journey on the Luas. There are no shortage of apartments to rent.

As someone else mentioned, there are some really nice parts of Tallaght worth considering.

I agree that if you're new to the city and want to get to know he place and would like plenty of entertainment on your doorstep, then the closer you are to the city centre the better. However the luas will take you about an hour each way to the square from town so the journey will get very tedious, very quickly.

hi all, just thought id post to update that after a few frustrating weeks of searching (saw 4 places i liked but didn't get them!), I've found a nice room on manor street in stonybatter. 5 mins from red line and then about 45 min into Tallaght. close enough to city centre to really feel the buzz of the place and enjoy the city. happy!
