Swapping HDD

    Hey

Quick question. A few weeks back my gfs parent desktop turned its legs upside down and I offered to recover the files. I have Windows on an Intel SSD and Media files on an old HDD. Now I thought since Windows was on an SSD id just plug out the old HDD and use the same cables. Tried booting up and PC told me that the system was corrupted and some files were missing. I got around that eventually, but I was planning on ordering a new HDD as the old one is getting very slow and noisy.

So just wondering how can I go around this problem or will I need to re install Windows 8 when installing the new HDD even though SSD holds Windows or am I missing something?

Also thinking of going with this -> http://www.dabs.ie/products/seagate-1tb-barracuda-sata-6gb-s-64mb-7200rpm-hard-drive-7XD5.html?src=7

Im not looking for latest and greatest. Just for good storage and enough for watching HD movies, playing music. Most of my games go onto the SSD

Once you get the new drive, attach it and boot windows up, then you'll need to format the new drive through Windows. It wont effect your SSD at all, unless you only have one SATA port and need to swap out the SSD so you can use the hard drive that is !

Just for storage, go with the WD.

Just for clarification does the SSD have a full working installation on it at the moment? As in does it boot into windows with no major issues? Also, for the HDD can you plug that into your own PC and is it recognised? If so does it still contain all the media that was originally on it. When a PC goes belly up it's very odd if both drives are broken, so chances are only one is at fault. If it's the OS drive a repair may work, if not a re-install may be needed, but I'd be sad to see a broken SSD.

    SSD holds all of Windows

When I first changed over it didn't automatically recognize my old HDD. I installed the SSD. Did a fresh install. Old HDD was formatted and then connected, but I had to manually go into and add the drive, but as I say If I actually remove the HDD (or did the last time) it said that files were MIA. It was weird, I plugged it back in and worked without a hiccup again, I just ended up unplugging the DVD Disc Drive and used its SATA and Power instead.

I did make sure that the Intel SSD was the 1st booting device too.

Well then you should be good to go if you want a new drive. To copy everything from the old drive to the new one I'd say try clonezilla, does the job quite well. You may be having the issue with the HDD being picked up as a foreign drive, which are not mounted as default out of the computers paranoia, happens to me with my 3tb everytime I disconnect it. Your choices of new HDD are good also, seagate all the way.
