There all pros on that list :P The paper work is fairness isn't hard at all, the teagasc lad over the group will be able to show ya all that. Herdplus has removes the messing through paperwork, and shows you so much detail, like full information on a cows history etc, totally invaluable!

Another waste of money paying people to attend meetings what a load of bollix

Sorry, the DEP, not the DES (I assume you coped that mistake). But anyways I'm guessing you didn't have a positive experience of them so ha? I can see you're point of view though, some of the farmers in our group had zero interest in actual changes. From my point of view it was an utter no brainer, getting paid to go learn how to farm better! Teagasc certainly are touting the whole thing to be a massive success anyways - http://www.teagasc.ie/publications/view_publication.aspx?PublicationID=1844

each to their own, i learnt alot, as usual there where the guys who knew everything anyways and others who where only there for the money.... 9 of us are staying on as a group. I think the fact there will be no money means that we are all commited now

Its always good to see what others are doing and thinking whether you agree with what they are doing or not.

We had our second of the year today. Only three were signin' the rest were only there because they wanted they wanted to be. Very good meeting plenty of guys making a good contribution with plenty of contrary views on most topics. I'm eligible for the scheme but there's too much duplication in what's outlined.

How long do these meetings go on for usually?

we have set down rulles in our group start at 11 sharp finsh at 1... any one over 20 minutes late can fook off and none of this crap of arriving late, signing in and fooking off after half an hour

11 to1 or 2 to 4 in our case. Wouldn't be as hard on latecomers esp during calving. Most guys stay for the full meeting. As I said most of us aren't there for DPD.

agree about during calving but we had 1 lad that was late for every meeting last year and would go home early, he is not in the group this year as there is no money in it for him, this guy runs a charolaois bull with his cows

Teagasc is 420quid this year for discussion group members. ICBF 50quid if you pay by direct debt, but if your complaining about that then you have utterly no idea the value of anything, 50quid is nothing considering the shedloads of information you can get up quickly about your herd, if it cost 500quid I'd have no problems paying it!

Nothing here yet! Time for an angry call to the adviser :P, cashflow is tight as fook at the minute with nuts and fertilizer bills!

Sorry Kev, jumped the gun there and assumed ya haven't signed up and were moaning, but I still personally think its probably the most useful 50quid spend on the farm!

What do you get from cell check that you don't get from milk recording?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,084 ✭✭✭kevthegaff

no worries, i enjoyed the first meeting even though ive spent donkey years in lectures and classrooms already! at the end of the day your getting payed to learn:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,786 ✭✭✭✭whelan1

yup, I think its great to see how other people do things, its great to go home and think how you could change things for the better, also on here you learn alot... i find myself in the group meetings talking about things i have picked up from boards:rolleyes:

I was talking about herdplus, not cell check. I'll agree with ya though, the hygiene guideline reports that were produced by that cell check were great, and thought me a good few things, but the actual cell check reports are abit pointless, a cow is a goner if she doesn't clear up quick, no two ways about it is there?
