"Best" is subjective. Fb2k for audio, SMPlayer for video... is what I use.

I've used two iterations of the WDTV Live box, the latest one has wireless and wired network capabilities, hdmi to the TV, and is easily discoverable on your network.

I have 2.5 TB attached to it, and not only can I watch the content on my TV, I can also stream to any computer in my house.

It also has Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, YouTube.

The other big attraction is the range of file formats it can handle
    AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG1/2/4), MPG/MPEG, VOB, MKV (h.264, x.264, AVC, MPEG1/2/4, VC-1), TS/TP/M2T (MPEG1/2/4, AVC, VC-1), MP4/MOV (MPEG4, h.264), M2TS, WMV9, FLV (h.264)
