I have a red setter dog 9 years old. 100 plus birds shot over this dog most seasons. He is used for duck shooting on the foreshore and inland lakes and bogs. Top class retriever, land and water. This dog is brilliant in heavy cover and by heavy cover i mean briars, heavy ditches, and high reed bogs. He will go all day, and 2 days in a row. I think he is too hard on himself by times. When birds are not plentiful this dog will work harder for you. He is a big strong dog dark red in colour his father was the same type of dog. I was spoiled for the last 20 years.

This dog is of the old moanruad strain. His grandfather was f.t.c.h.clontarf ashton the whole way back is mostly moanruad. These dogs were big dark dogs .he was bread to a fair good bitch and the pups are 6 months old and showing great promise. I have seen a lot of red in the last few years, and some are just alright in cover. Some wont retrieve, some need a lot of birds to keep them going, and most are the small modern field trial type dog.

Now for the big question. Is there anybody out there that has a similar bitch to this dog that would be keen on breeding. If so i would like to see her work. I have seen other bitches that were suppose to be good working, but i would not breed with them because they were not that good. I don't believe in breeding just for the sake of it. That is what is wrong with a lot of the gun dog breeds today. For me a dog that is not good in cover, well you know the rest.
