GH asks if Alan Shatter should attend funeral

On George Hook today the question was asked ''should Alan Shatter attend the funeral of Garda Donoghue.''

I can see some people blame him for cuts to the force. I think that he should be present. Shatter is needed to represent the state. Arguments like this should be put aside for now.

Anyone turning this funeral into any kind of political issue is an arsehole.

    So why create the thread.

    Minister for Justice. Murdered Garda.

Of course he should attend. Anyone who says he shouldn't is just cynically using the murder for their own selfish political purposes.

There is plenty of time for whatever else after, let the man's funeral be just that. The only reason he should not attend is if it's what the man's family want.

He should focus on his job.

Should he attend the funeral of all police women or men?

Im sure Det Donoghue's family could not care less if some minister attends or not, non story imo.

He is not needed to represent the state, we are capable of representing ourselves.

Would you believe some people hold different opinions to mine?

Big difference between what you're talking about and someone killed on the job.

In a small country like Ireland, where Gardaí being killed on the job is such a rare occurrence, I would think so.

How are you sure of that?

Didn't hear Hook today. Did he ask the question in a shít stirring manner? If so it would be in poor taste as that is an argument for another day.

Is he still swanning around in America? this might explain why he is somewhat detached from the mood of the public here.

Of course Shatter should attend the funeral. He's the Minister for Defence and Juctice. Even if no one else represents the state, he should.

George Hook is away with the fairies.

Did cutbacks have anything to do with him being killed? If not I dont see why it keeps being brought up.

Do you think the family will give a rattling fook if he worms over and shake their hands pretending he gives a fook

Its a tragedy but imo he should just shutup and do his job

Garda Donoghue is dead because some shower of low-lifes shot him.
Ultimately it is the gangsters that are to blame for this appalling crime.
Not Garda funding, not Garda staffing or anyone else.

    Alan Shatter didn't do it.

He's the Minister. Of course he should attend.

Guess George Hook is just an unscrupulous asshat trying to gain publicity by riling up the all the unthinking cretins out there but it's still depressing.

Why would you think he doesn't give a fcuk? Every normal person would give a fcuk.

Shatter, Kenny, Callinan and Higgins all must be there.

As for cuts to the Gardaí - crime goes up in recessions, not down. >14,500 Gardaí are required to efficiently police the state, not 12,500. Anyone who says otherwise is a blithering moron.

He's not some pantomime villain despite some of the crap you read on here. You may disagree with his policies etc. but it's a pretty big leap to start spouting stuff like he doesn't care a garda was killed on duty. Likewise you have no clue what his family thinks about the situation and it's not unimaginable that they would like to see a representative from the state at the funeral since the man died working for them. If someone was killed in an industrial accident do you think someone from the company should represent them at the funeral?

I dont see why people are going on about the cut backs, in the boom time do you's think there would have been 10 armed garda on the escort? No!

Don't think he was stirring it. Sounded like he meant it. He was responding to a caller I think.

I turned him off too soon to hear much about it. Striking question to ask at this stage.

The states income also goes down, a lot.
