If you choose year plates, you or the next owner can still decide to go with ZVs down the line.

Not the other way around, though. :)

If it's badged as an Astra, it has to be a Vauxhall :-) No Opel Astras in 1983 :D

A friend has an 84 D xxxx plate on a car he imported 10 years ago , when his cars hits 30 years can he apply for ZV plates then?

Depends on the county. A newly imported 83 reg will have a very high number for the county. Not sure about Galway but in Dublin it would be in the 120,000 range.

Its deffo a Vauxhall ... ! Any sold through official channels in this country were Opel. My aunts husband at the time had a Vauxhall Astra 1300 identical to this girl. As far as I remember the reg was 319 KIM.... ! There was a problem in the early Kadett/Astra 1300 OHC with oil starvation in the cambox - this resulted in premature camshaft wear ! I can still hear the clattey cams of 1981 and 1982 ! There was a recall where a hole was bored in the distributor drive housing to improve the oil flow. 319 KIM suffered this issue an Opel were reluctant to honour the recall because it was a Vauxhall. I remember my late father and aunties husband argueing with the Opel lads ! The issue was sorted by Opel after a solicitor get involved in the episode

This lady I have is 1983 and has the "modification". She is a delight to drive. She is that browny/orangey/reddy base colour with orange interior which just screams 80's at you ! You know she has that old GM smell and the doors sound like a GM. She has that rasp in the exhaust all the OHC cars had !

I think 83-DL-*** might suit her better. In 1987 when the new system came out a lot of Astras would have been brought in to Ireland and wore the 83 style plate ! ZV just would not look period correct. Before the 91 on euro plate cars wore black letters on a white background ...!

Sorry for the length of the post and I will have to put up a few Pics when I get her sorted right.. Thanks Lads

Yep. My own car is 30 years this year but I'm not sure I'll bother. (Though I may get overexcited and do it...) :)

Isn't there always! Can recall but I've a dim memory of a €50 amount.

Not huge anyway. Obviously you need to get your new plates yourself.

Well you looking at 83-DL-11301 or higher. It's not going to be a low number.

    83-DL-11301

So much for Revenue telling us that the 'import plates would only be in use for one year (2012) due to a computer problem' (or words to that effect) ?!!

whichever set of numbers you select, can I please urge you to get a square red rear plate with the raised plasticlettering

that's the detail I think is more important than the actual numbers for the car to look period

I'd ask them what the numbers are when registering...

ZV would be just above 31401

    That's a good point!

OP, make up your mind which format you're going to go with but be prepared to change your mind if an interesting number is next in line for the alternative. :)
