Saorview Approved TV?

Bought a TV for my parents recently Samsung 22" UE22D5003BW. The store said it was Saorview Approved but when we set it up at home it was breaking up and freezing all of the time. We rang Saorview who said that the TV was not approved. Brought it back to the store who insisted that it is approved but that Samsung just wouldnt pay the €16,000 to have the Saorview Approved sticker displayed on the box! They also said that once you can display the TV Guide and view upcoming programmes and not just 'whats on now' that this indiciates that it is Saorview Approved.

They suggested that it is the Saorview signal that is the problem and that a re-organisation of cables may improve it. We took their advice and did this which did improve the break up somewhat but there is still a certain amount of it on an on going basis.

We would love to know if it is the TV that is the problem or the Saorview signal. Could anybody shed any light on it for us??

Maybe post your query in Broadcasting rather than Musicals and you might get a quicker answer! ;)

If it's actually approved, it will be on this list. The approval process amounts to more than just paying for the right to put a sticker on the box. That's not to say the tv won't work fine with Saorview, but the shop can't sell it to you as an approved model, when it clearly isn't.

Almost certainly the signal. Probably down to your own receiving aerial setup. Maybe see what the Saorview coverage checker has to say about your location.

Thanks Peter. We had checked the saorview.ie approved list and its not on it, however the guy in the shop said that if you can get the Tv guide up on screen and view upcoming programmes that it is approved! We just dont want to have problems with the TV down the line with picking up saorview signal if its not approved. Maybe we should get someone to check out the aerial....

Almost certainly a signal issue. When the set scans the band it will pick up the digital signal from several transmitter sites. Usually your antenna is aimed at just one transmitter and that's the one where you'll get the strongest signal with the least/no dropout or blockiness. Scroll through all the channels the TV has saved and see if any are better. In some areas you'll need a good rooftop aerial with a head amp and PSU, is that your set up ? Are you sure the power supply for the aerial is plugged in ? Check that all coax cables are properly made off and not shorting.

Lots of TVs don't carry Saorview "approval", this doesn't mean they won't work or receive and display the signal. The exception would be TVs sold in the UK where they don't use MPEG4. Their system is called Freeview and some confuse this with Saorview because of course Saor means Free :)
