where are the best K1 gyms in Ireland at the minute.

I am not talking about thai boxing gyms that do K1, but are there any very good "K1 only" gyms in Ireland

    many thanks

    Paddy

The best? I'd be surprised if there are any at all.

I'd imagine you would have a much better idea than I would but for the sake of discussion... I'm just guessing here but I'd say that any decent K1 fighters about, despite their style being more suited to K1 (Aslan, Casserly etc) are training in Thai gyms as thats where the competition/coaches with contacts are.

Apologies for hijacking your thread Paddy..... we are running a mixed sport show(MT,K1,maybe FC and MMA) in april in Galway featuring a few K1 bouts but its not easy to make matches right now , there seems to be a lot of full contact kickboxing gyms competing in a shinpads version of k1 but are not keen to fight the full version. Not aware of any k1 only gyms but hopefully that will change soon as its probably the most consistently entertaining of all the fightsports.

I've been teaching K-1 for several years now and have a class every Friday at 6pm.
I ran the first K-1 tournament in Ireland 7 years ago in Leisureland with over 1100 fight fans in attendance - we flew in 8 heavyweights from England, France, Belgium, Holland and a couple from North & South of Ireland who all fought down to one for a cash prize and we had it televised and it went out every day for a month on one of the Sky channels.
We have a couple of K-1 fights on all of our shows and regularly send people away to the Algarve & France for K-1 fights.
We have fighters wear shinnies if they are amatuer or without if they're pro - we don't just call it "Pro Rules" and let them go without.
If a fighter is Pro - they get paid - if not, they dont - but there has to be a difference and we dont let fighters go "Pro" after 5 minutes.
Normally a fighter would have over 20 fights at least before going "Pro" and then we find his/her activity might suffer as they may not get as many fight offers - quite simply put: if a promoter wants to put on a "Pro" fight, they may struggle to match someone up and then they have to fly a fighter (& coach) in which would probably cost (between flights, hotel, food & purse fees) a minimum of €1000 for one fight - if theres a title involved then factor in sanction fees, good quality belt etc.
So in these economic times, practicallity dictates as sponsors are sparce and not as willing to part with their hard earned cash.

I thought K1 was a company!? And they hold kickboxing matches.

That's like asking where to train in UFC, no?

Very true Morph, but I think people are asking are there any K-1 style clubs i.e. low kick, knees and limited clinch, as there are in the Netherlands.

K-1 is a company. K-1 uses International Rules but for ease and convenience its been dubbed K-1 rules.

    No clinch limit in muaythai

K1 is a company so I don't really see the difference between people saying that they 'train K1' and the much ridiculed 'I train UFC' brigade.

Hi Don - sorry mate but I've five fighters fighting in France on April 13 - appreciate the offer though and hopefully we can work together sometime.

I suppose people say they train K-1, because it rolls off the tonuge easier than low-kick kickboxing with limited clinch. I really don't see what the big deal is

Great, maybe the thread can get back on topic now.

Ryoshin Fight Team have an active stable of K1 fighters & offer K1 classes on a Tuesday & Thursday at 8pm. We currently hold the ISKA Pro Middleweight K1 title through Henry "Herculeez" Fadipe, & have a good team of amateur K1 fighters coming through the ranks this year. Also Uvais "Aslan" Bisayev trains with us. He does however represent Bridgestone for Thai & K1 as it was his original gym, but he represents us within MMA so he will be around the gym to help guys out. We always welcome guys looking to pursue a career within K1, not only MMA.

Bridgestone is his current gym. His standup coach is Paul Kelly

Yes & I never indicated that he was no longer there. If you had read it correctly you would understand that I am saying he is sticking with Bridgestone for Thai & K1 because that's where he started, & he is a very loyal guy. We 100% back his decision & fully agree with him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭Peetrik

Sounded like you were saying he only represented Bridgestone as it was where he started but he does his standup training in Lucan in a Pramuk/Banchamak kind of situation.

Wouldn't want there to be any confusion.

Sorry if it seemed like I was saying he left, just meant that he does still represent & train in Bridgestone. All sorted :)

but its very impressive that you know the difference.

Your link is irrelevant. UFC and K1 are not eponyms. The sport was not named after the organisations.

Saying you train in "K1" or "UFC" (assuming you don't actually have a contract with either company) is like saying you do the "hoovering", or you like to eat "Taytos" when you mean crisps in general, or you drive a "Jeep" when it's just an SUV. Or like saying you train in NFL.

Nice try at using a big word though - pity you used it in the wrong context and your attempt to pwn me fell flat on it's face.

Does any of that really matter?
Can everyone agree that the ruleset K-1 uses is a unique ruleset and that ruleset has commonly become known as K1 rules?

No - it doesn't matter. I made a simple comment on Page 1 that a few people agreed with - then we moved on. Then "Stillweak" moseys in days later and tries to pwn me like an amateur.
So no - it doesn't matter - but tell that to Johnny Come-Lately above, who decided to drag us off topic 3 days after the original post.

And my original comment wasn't even a sneer or having a go - I just asked a question, as I myself wasn't 100% sure, since I don't follow K1, but was aware they hold/held kickboxing events.
    I thought K1 was a company!?
See? A question - that others answered, then we moved on.

So I am guessing there are no good K1 gyms in Ireland at the minute, as no one seems to know any of them

I don't believe K1 have opened a gym here yet - but there may be a few other gyms that train using their rule set.

I know Kokoro train K1 rules on Tue & Thu night from 20.00 - 21.30. Daragh Kennedy is the trainer, and he's excellent.
