Daily Taxi?

    Hi folks,

I've just gotten a new job and am in the 6 month period waiting to sit my driving test. Unfortunately the commute by public transport (two busses) will be over two hours each way (north to west dublin). However it would only take around 30 mins in a car so I'm wondering if it's unheard of to strike a deal with a taxi company to bring me 5 days a week for the couple of months until I pass my test. I'd only be looking for it in the mornings. Without some kind of deal there's no way I can afford this taxi ride, I'm guessing it will be at least €30 a day so would void a large proportion of my daily wage.

Has anyone done this or know what would be the best way to go about this? I don't think carpooling with another employee is an option as I don't know anyone else who lives this far away!

You can ring a cab company and ask them but there isn't any decent reason why you would get a good fare for what is just one trip a day for any one of a few hundred drivers who may get the fare (Bear in mind, it's the driver who gets the fare, not the base). Best off to ask a taxi driver directly if you can give him an assured daily trip that's worthwhile taking on and if they can give you a deal on same.

Where are going from to where? People here may know of a shuttle bus that would benefit you more.

Unfortunately I won't be able to move for a while, more likely to get the license first. It's Phibsboro to Newcastle/Rathcoole. Planning on getting a quick bus to the city centre and then taking the 68 or 69 all the way out.

I know its not exact, but we dont really know where you're going. But the NTA Journey Planner says it should take an hour and 6 minutes. Got to www.a-b.ie and put in your exact journey.

I don't see how you cannot afford accommodation if your willing to pay say 100 euro a week on transport and also own a car? Even something short term for the six months till you get the car. Or else just chance driving on the provisional. Don't know how strick they are in dublin though on that.

Wow that journey planner came up with a much quicker way than what I was thinking of, thanks so much! Eliminated a lot of the walking between stops.

Would love to cycle too, might give that a go when the weather's a little nicer.

    Thanks everyone, I think I'm sorted! :)

No problem. It can have a few faults, so just double check timetables etc, but its usually spot on
