His most recent 2012 review wasn't so funny but generally ever since the days of pc zone this guy is well worth watching / reading

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,997 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

Judging by the format, he's also managed to consolidate You Have Been Watching into it.

Anybody have any scoop on 10 O'Clock Live? There was rumblings of it back in June, linked in with the Jimmy Carr business, and his likeliness to return, but it's all gone hush, seemingly. This is the only reference Google's got.

    Also on other BBC variations.

This is on in half an hour, just giving it a bump as a reminder.

I caught a bit, was alright! Didn't think he would be interviewing people but that part kind of worked.

    I Dug Stanhope :)

Stanhopes joke at Britain rebuilding its 1100 year old road system after the WWII bombings as a "spit in the face to Hitler" was probably the highlight for me.

Pretty good this, one of the best things he's done for a while.

the film review bit was awful, it felt really awkward. The girl barry ****peas is really annoying too. The rest was good though, I'll definitely be watching again.

I like the female Barry ****peas! I dunno, it's just her delivery and how close to some real life people I know she is.

That whole section about Africa was brilliant. Although I must admit I may have already had tears streaming down my face over the section about "Splash" which might have made Africa funnier.

I liked him reading out people's sneering at Linda Barker.

    Movie review bit, blah.

    Balls... forgot about this!

No repeat either... balls to it!

I'm sure it's available, eh... online... via completely legal means...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,566 ✭✭✭Funglegunk

Enjoyed it a lot. Probably not as good as Screenwipe but as this is a weekly show there is much less time to prepare the sort of segments that were the great thing about that show. Will keep watching definitely, Charlie Brooker is one of the best things on TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Enjoyed this. Even the very short review of Django Unchained had more depth than Claudia Wonkleman's Film 2013.

The Africa section was hilarious. "Giant vagina monsters" :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,070 ✭✭✭Tipsy McSwagger

Brilliant, highlight was either Lance Armstrong dropping the ball or Prince Harry's pen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭Psychedelic

I could listen to Brooker for hours, so fcking funny. Didn't like the 'your comments' section.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

That was very good. Nice to have it for a few weeks. It is also being shown on the BBC HD channel.

That Splash programme looks like some god awful ****e.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,516 ✭✭✭✭briany

An enjoyable programme but not that much different to his old Screenwipe series. Not that I'm complaining because Screenwipe was great. I expect the Wipe is just to give Brooker the scope to satirise whatever he wants which will probably be grotesque reality TV and creepy news media shenanigans in the main with the odd video game/music/movie/magazine/internet bits thrown in. It will not be an even smorgasboard of satire as some had hoped it might be.

Best part of the episode was the American gun control segment. That was both hilarious and chilling in equal measure, and for different reasons.

Very good stuff, although I could live without the 'Your Comments' section and Philomena Cunk.

I didn't even know 'Splash' existed before watching Weekly Wipe; it's kind of unfair really because all Brooker has to do is show some clips and let the toe-curling awfulness speak for itself.

I do wish he would get rid of the other people - that woman was one of the most annoying aspects of 2012-wipe, so the thought of having her as a weekly regular is disappointing. Thankfully I intend to stream, just so I can skip passed the segments I dislike.

Re: Splash, I can't fathom why Omid Djalili was on it. Always thought he was a reasonably respected comic and didn't need to resort to that kind of work on such a low grade show. Maybe he was doing it for charity, maybe he just loves diving, I don't know, but I think that it cheapens his name.

I think she's OK. I understand why she's in there. She's a parody of the many vacuous celebrity Twitteristas and bloggers out there giving their hollow opinions while posing as journalists and trying to sound insightful even though they're anything but. Exactly the kind of person that Brooker has loved to take piss out off since Screenwipe S01E01.

Don't know why they need to bleep the swear words at 10 o'clock in the evening. If it was in a film/drama at this time, they would happily curse away. Charlie Brooker says fúck a couple of times and it gets bleeped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,599 ✭✭✭ScrubsfanChris

In comedies, bleeps are funnier than the actual swear I think (Arrested Development/Father Ted)

I think that the Doug Stanhope segments have been the highlight so far, as they have been since he started appearing. I know that it's mostly material lifted directly from his standup act but it's no less hilarious for it and it's basically tailor made for the show's cynical world view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74,302 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

    Melanie Sykes...the cheerful oak tree!

Loved the "well, that's Mali for you!" with the Bob Marley snippets.

Was in London last weekend and witnessed the tasering of the guy outside the palace first hand - was hoping there'd be a bit more about it. Was bizarre to say the least.

    Hiya!

I'm really enjoying the series! Especially Doug Stanhope, which I didn't expect. Love him.

Good to see Richard Herring as part of the talkshow segment tonight, whole segment was far better then last week.

Die Hard bit went on too long for my liking.

I think it's good as an idea, but the problem is she's trying too hard and - unlike Brooker - she doesn't have a natural comic ability. The act is very transparent and not at all effective!

Besides that I'm enjoying it. Not at the same level as screen wipe so far, but I'll take what I can get! I think Brooker is a major talent.

Philomena Cunk is genius, wasn't sure at first but I really like the way she "gets" television!

The worst thing about Weekly Wipe is that I end up glimpsing bits of programmes that are among the worst ever made, I go out of my way not to see Splash Boy and Paddy Bloke on the box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74,302 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

The talkshow segment is good, due to time restraints it is a shame it is not longer.

Also surprised to see Tim 'Sidekick Simon' Key instead of Doug Stanhope.

Maybe Doug was drunk this week.

Yeah, and they just repeated the same joke over and over.

And Cunk isn't funny, and her character is a bit inconsistent, at times she is just dumb but then she is sarcastic. Unlike Barry Shitpeas who is just dumb.

Missed Doug this week, was never a fan of the poetry segment in the other wipes.

Enjoyed it though, get a good laugh from this series so far and there's more hits than misses with the jokes.

Same, I think it is significantly weaker than the other Wipe programmes but I still consume basically everything Charlie Brooker does as I think the man is something of a ledge.

Maybe if Brooker dropped the 'weekly' (Charlie Brooker's Wipe *snigger, snigger*) part of the title and didn't try to stay up to date with the news, he could pick and choose his targets for maximum comic impact. As it is, because the production cycle for each episode is so short, they have to pad it out with recurring bits like 'Points Off You". I had hoped, somewhat naively, that he would include a little bit about gaming in these 'omni-wipes' because they're a big interest of his and he's done a whole program on them before. Sadly it looks like that's not going to be the case but I still enjoy Brooker's stuff greatly.

On the subject of his game related stuff, here's the audio of him supposedly reviewing (more like prank calling) one of several game companies' tech support lines during his time at PC Zone magazine. Other magazines are available.

You're joking... the Pope? Oh my God!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭niallk

Barry ****peas and female ****peas are reading the same script written by Brooker. It is then edited, to show the best deliveries of each line. So, sorry to break it to you, but you people that don't like the female ****peas just hate all women. :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,516 ✭✭✭✭briany

You're joking... the Pope? Oh my God!

A funny soundbite but it was shown about 4 or 5 times. A decent recurring gag which also took up about a minute or so of the program through it's repetition. A minute less for them to cover!

I like the bit where Brooker compared Papal candidates to characters in a beat 'em up game.
