    Hi Folks,

My questions may seem a little dim so please bare with me. I've only ever holidayed within Europe so haven't had to contend with visas before.

Myself and the good lady are looking to head to New York during the summer. I'm Irish, never been in trouble with the law, mortgage and all that jazz- I don't think I need apply for a visa do I? Am I right in thinking I can just fill out a form in the airport..... aka because of the visa waiver?

My other half (not married yet) is Polish- does that complicate things much?

Many thanks for what may very well be dim questions.

You need to fill in an electronic visa waiver application called ESTA and pay a small fee: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

Your partner, being from Poland, will need a tourist visa: http://dublin.usembassy.gov/how_to_apply.html

Many thanks for both those links silja. I just had a quick read of the tourist visa page and it mentioned not to purchase flights until you had the visa, logical enough, but once issued with a visa how long is it valid for? As in does it give you a reasonable time window within which to book flights?

B visa for European citizens are usually for 10 years and allow multiple entries of no longer than 6 months each.
