alternative to mhvr

    Hi all,

Just wondering if there is a cheaper/viable alternative to MHVR? We are starting a self-build in a few weeks and have the usual budget constraints. Hoping to insulate and airtight as well as possible (within our budget) but am concerned about ventilation. Vents in windows? Open windows? Electric fans? Is there a point in trying to get a reasonable level of airtightness without MVHR?

    Would really appreciate any advice.

I'd put it like this ..... insulate to a Ferrari standard but if you do not have MHVR then it will be like a well insulated block of Swiss cheese with all the holes required for vents. Holes in windows no longer allowed afaik

If the airtightness of the dwelling is being designed to fall somewhere between 1.5 - 2 m3/hr/m2 then a Demand Controlled Ventilation system might be an appropriate alternative for roughly a third of the cost of a MVHR unit.

DCV is really more suitable for large open plan rooms like lecture rooms, theatres etc, in a multiroom dwelling its not that effective.

from the point of view of "heat recovery" theres no real viable alternative to MHRV at the moment.

there are some systems being tried out but nothing really marketable right now.

If you are just talking about ventilation systems well theres the 3 main types; hole in the wall; demand control; or mechanical with heat recovery.
The first two offer no recovery of heat back into the dwelling so whether you consider that an alternative option is up to you.

do your homework on the MHRV systems and talk to people who have the systems installed.

A decent video (of course they are selling DCV so obviously the video sells the system well)
