Does a Garda deserve respect purely because he is a Garda? Isn't respect something that is earned? Just because he is wearing a uniform he demands that he be respected.

Regardless of the merits of your (undisclosed) opinion, starting a thread like this 24 hours after a Garda was killed in the line of duty is unbelievably distasteful. IMHO.

No, its because a wearer of the Uniform has just been killed. What do you want? A Guard to invite you out for drinks and gets to know you before they pull you over or stop you in the street. Guards have to display a show of authority if they are to be taken seriously, dont think its meant to be disrespectful. Yes there are bad ones, but isn't it the same for every profession.
