The vitara is a lovely looking jeep and the 4x4 function is great. Fuel wise about 600 miles to a tank (approx 85 Eur to fill). The big thing with the Vitaras when they came out in 2008 was the road tax but if you can get one that measures tax charges on emissions then that's a plus. They can be a bit jumpy to drive but I loved mine I have to say.Great height and comfort but watch the wheel cover, it cracks easily!

A Rav4 or Honda Crv are much nicer imo. I find the Vitara to be slighty crude to drive compared to them. I think a good car would be better than all three though.

But for 08 vitara money you're looking at pre 08 crv and rav4 which are over €1000 tax as they're taxed as 2.3

Have a read of this and maybe contact an owner from there. I have experience of the previous model, which I could recommend (as a 4x4) but hear bad things quite a bit about the 08 on:)

If you have to worry about the mpg of a vehicle then its probably less than you want it to be. Any SUV/4x4 is going to be more expensive to run with its extra running gear, weight, size, reduced aerodynamics etc.

You're doing 150 miles a week on your round trip which isn't a lot to warrant a diesel. It's about 1/4 of a tank per week from other posters calculations, which currently is about E21-E22 a week (about E1144 a year in fuel for work).

I'm guessing you want an 08 to get newer tax rates? The GV seems to be 179g/km which means its E750 a year to tax.

Do you need or want a 4x4 or a bigger SUV type vehicle? It's a lot more expense just to have one. If you wanted a similar sized vehicle to the GV you could look at a Subaru Forester. 2.0L, AWD, cheaper to tax (E710) but way cheaper to buy and the savings would pay for your fuel costs for years to come.

You'd have the 4WD aspect, more car like handling, no unexpected repair bills that can happen with diesels and have something a little different.

the forester avgs 23mpg in petrol for that fuel consumption you could have a full size 4x4 with all the trimming doing better with mpg on diesel.

Same old spin gets put out all the time
dual mass flywheel, turbo, diesel particulate filters, injectors

The dual mass flywheel is mostly a manual transmission problem that can go faulty and cost in the high hundreds to repair. this is true of any diesel car van or 4x4 but most people don't experience this until the car has cover high mileage. I don't think its a issue with automatics but someone more technical might chime in here and clarify this

Turbo yes they can fail just as they do on petrol turbos

Diesel particulate filter required at least 20mins of motorway or high speed driving about once a week to burn of the particles, city or town driving most of the time will clog the filter if not getting a fast long run regularly.
This should be the deciding factor.... as modern diesels don't make good city only cars.

injectors every car has them both petrol and diesel.

Cost to diesel car or 4x4 are more expensive to buy but hold their value better giving you better return when selling.

old big engine petrol cars are hard enough to give away especially with high mileage

Avoid like the plague would be my opinion!! Currently own a 2007 1.9 ddis. The DPF went first - was quoted 2500 for a new one to be fitted, and the dealer actually advised on getting it removed. Did so, everything grand for a while.

Next, the turbo blew, jammed on - overheating the engine - full engine rebuild and 4500 euros later and she's as good as new. ;-)

It's just a shame that this model is let down by the crappy Renault engine in it. It's a nice looking yolk, handles pretty well for it's size and the optional diff lock is handy in snowy conditions (if/when you might get stuck). But I just can't justify keeping her now. Also, fuel economy is pretty crappy. I barely get 30mpg on a good day.

    Hope this helps!
