Advice needed for €800 gaming build (Monitor not inc.)

Hi guys, heard great things about this forum. Good to get advice from Irish based gamers too.

I have set the budget at a firm e800. I know I could put more into it, but really I don't need to.

    Bits I have...

    - Monitor, vga only
    - Keyboard and mouse
    - 1Tb external storage

Build will be for gaming as I said, with some photoshop / illustrator.

It is my intention to eventually have a dual-monitor setup. I know this could be important to factor in, but it's important to know that I won't need to worry about driving 2 monitors for games. It will just be for working with databases and watching video while browsing.

I will eventually need a monitor but I would rather just take the plunge and get the tower sorted. I have an ancient 19 inch monitor that will do fine for a short while. I'm currently using a pc that can barely run flash games due to a fire a few months back, which is why I'm just mad to get the tower asap.

I'm so out of the loop in terms of hardware it's not even funny.

I understand SSD's have dropped in price quite a bit, although I am very wary of any possibly reliability problems.

This might be met with eye rolls, but I'd like to make it upgradeable in the future, within reason, if it don't have to compromise too much.

I don't have my heart set on anything, so I'm open to any suggestions.

Hardware Versand was recommended to me and I was looking at this suggested build they have. Does not include OS.

I could be on Hardware Versand all day but I don't really know what's good value or what bits go well with each other or if parts are compatible but not ideally paired together, that sort of thing.

    Thanks a million guys.

    arre you going to overclock?

if you are change the motherboard to this and add an aftermarket cooler

    Item|Price
    ASRock Z77 Pro3, Sockel 1155, ATX|€83.99
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - Intel/AMD|€29.36

if you are not going to overclock then drop the CPU to

    Item|Price
    Intel Core i5-3470 Box, LGA1155|€168.91

to save a bit of cash

also SSD's make a massive speed boost overall to the system and deffo something to look into i wouldn't sacrifice CPU or GPU for it

I would possibly overclock but really I need to find out more about it. I know what it is of course, I just don't have a clue what effect it generally has on the life of parts.

    Thanks for that.

Don't worry too much about overclocking for now really, as there's no reason you need to overclock. I have the 3570K I got specifically for OC'ing, but I haven't bothered yet, everything I've played runs at ultra and even at that, is far more GPU bottlenecked anyway.

Any suggestions re places to look besides Hardware Versand?

What do people think of Mindafactory.de? They use DHL for shipping (so 30 euro), but they can beat HWVS for some prices. The tray 3570k is basically the same as the one on HWVS, but for some reason they charge about 7 euro less for the one with the stock HSF! A good price on the mobo too.

    CPU stock HSF

CPU tray (same price as HWVS) might as well get the other one and sell the stock cooler and put in your own one

A few quid saved on this, too!

Pretty good site for pricing at least, I think. the 30 euro delivery might not make it worth uit, though, oly for igger orders. Honestly, HWVS is really good for pricing as it is.

The tray CPUs have a far inferior warranty to the retail box ones, so definately get the box version.

Shouldn't it really have a baseline 2 year warranty according the EU law?

Its not black and White but technically that just applies to an inherant day one faults, and after 6 months the onus is on you to prove it was present from the beginning. Whereas a manufacturer warranty covers subsequent faults that develop after the fact.

The sale of goods act provides further protections over the EU directive such as a resonable period of use etc, bit that wouldn't apply to a cross border transaction.

Also AMD or intel will only accept an rma directly for a box cpu which is much handier if something goes wrong after a few years.

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure if you sell to Ireland from an online store you must adhere to Ireland's laws (this being specific to Ireland). And we have the "good must be of merchantable quality" which is actually a really strong law for the consumer (give 4 - 7 years for white goods, for example - that is, microwaves, cookers etc).

It is where the retailer is based.

It would clearly be far less hastle in the event that anything went wrong with a retail CPU rather than having to persue a cross border claim where after the initial 6 month period when the burden of proof then falls on the consumer to show the fault was present at delivery (Although German Law may well be different on this point)
