Which NH sire would u visit?

    Hi,

I'm just curious which nh sire people are/would visit this year? I have an alderbrook mare and am unsure about who to go to. This will be her 2nd time covering so I'm definitely looking for a stallion with runners on the ground ie proven/sermi proven. Stowaway at 2k is very cheap but i heard he covered circa 300 mares last year, so might be a bit hard to stand out in the sales. Court Cave at 3.5k has done well thus far and is another option. If i was to take a gamble i'd go for vinnie roe at 2.5k, I think his progeny have done well and he'll become more fashionable in a couple of years. Anybody have any opinions?

    Thanks

Are you definitely looking to sell, what's your budget

Sorry I should have made that clear. I'm a commercial breeder so the progeny will be sold. Whether its sold as foal, yearling or store i don't know yet. Besides the the likes of fleminsfirth and presenting at around the 10k mark i think 4.5k encompasses most of the nh stallions in ireland. So 4.5k would probably be max nomination i'd spend. I thought i saw Robin des Champs advertised at 5k, he's a stallion i like but it's a decent bit to spend especially if you get a filly. FYI the mares in foal to Shantou at the mo.

Yeah Robin Des Champs is 5k. We have a yearling colt in the Febraury sales by him next month. Lovely colt. Court Cave is a good shout though, we have used him this year twice.

I was just going to suggest Robin Des Champs. 5k is plenty enough for a NH stallion but his sell very, very well. At half his price you could go for his half brother at Anngrove Robin des Pres but probably not as good comercially.

Big fan of Court Cave from few chances and I would have recommended Gold Well but since he moved to Coolmore all value is gone and he'll be getting big numbers I'd imagine.

I'm not the biggest Vinnie Roe fan but at 2.5 he's fine, and I was looking at sons of Galileo but I'm not entirely sure how the likes of Sans Frontiers will fare.

If it were me I'd be going to Court Cave, have you any idea of the numbers he's gotten this year, I'd say they're up drastically, but selling well

One other I'd consider is Papal Bull

Thanks for the replies. As far as I know Court Cave covered around 200 mares last year. He's gone up in price this year but I'd say it will be around that figure again this year. Re Gold Well I think 5k is too expensive for what he's produced, sure the first crop to run for him have shown alot of promise and hes a great pedigree but i'd personally like Robin des champs at that money. I'd like to go a sire with runners for the mares first couple of coverings so I wouldn't consider papal bull (I didn't like his attitude as a racehorse although it didn't stop him from winning some nice rices).

Personally I think you'd be crazy not to add another €500 to get to 5 grand.

Robin Des Champs progeny will sell for crazy prices if Sir de Champs and Un Atout win at Cheltenham.

I think Milan would be another good shout at 5 grand but slightly overpriced to Robin Des Champs on sales figures. Although has a lot more going through the ring selling at decent figures before Jeski and Darlan have upped his status.

Gold Well is selling well and has made an impressive start but 5 grand might be a little too much of a jump so early for me.

I don't see anything in Court Cave progeny at the moment that might win a big grade 1 pot at Cheltenham. That would rule him out.

If a sire gets a couple of big rated winners that's what ups his sales figures , thus letting you sell early as a foal with less costs to yourself.

I also feel you might lose more on a filly from a lower priced stallion that an upper priced stallion, a 3.5k sire filly might only sell for 1k but a 5k sire would surely not sell for less than 3k.

    Good Thread Sea The Starz

Kalinisi and Beneficial would be two proven sires I would consider

Mahler and Scorpion are fairly popular at the sales.

If you were were waiting to sell as a store then its possible the likes of Mountain High, Darsi or Arcadio may have taken off with winners and have a reasonable cover fee.

As a matter of interest what is the cover fee of Shantou. He seems to do well at the sales

Shantous up to 4.5k from 4k last year. I'd say you'd get a filly foal deal tbh. Yes very happy we went to him last year. Fashionable at the sales and has some nice horses as well. He's just lacking that flagship grade 1 winner but has plenty of potential black type horses. Sword of destiny of Noel Meades looked smart but I don't see him entered so I assume he's been injured which is a pity considering the weakness of some of our top novice chases ie a 3 runner arkle tomorrow. Others like briar hill, super duty, our father, heath hunter, kilmurvy, morning assembly etc have the potential to be good so hopefully in a year or two's time one of them will have stamped themselves as a grade 1 performer.

Just a quick question to everyone. Should you place much emphasis on the sires large book number. A friend of mine contends that u should aim to be in the top 10% of your sire book ie that agents at the sales will only by ex amounts of milans, beneficials etc. Are agents really that fickle? Surely it should only matter if your foal is in the top 10% of the sale eg just because theres 20 galileo's in the sale and yours is the 15th nicest..thats a bad thing even if its still in the top 10 percentile of a 500 plus lot sale? Sorry for being long winded, im not sure if people will understand what im trying to ask here.

Jeremy might be a nice option also, not sure of price but should not be too bad.

Personally I wouldnt buy into that 10% waffle. If you have a correct, good looking colt foal then they will be interested. Value to the agents isnt always in the top 10% of a sires progeny.

A filly foal is where NH breeders problems are. You couldnt give them away irrespective of which stallion yo go to

    Milan.

Huge potential as a sire. Good value out there a the sales and obviously has the blood lines to produce some crackers.

Jeremy is incredibly uncommercial, his drop in fee says alot 3000 from 12.5 a few years ago

Sea the Starz one to consider maybe the time after this given he's unproven will be Born to Sea. Can see him going down the NH route

His drop in fee is more to do with him changing from a flat sire to a NH sire. The reason i would be suggesting him is in 3/4 years time i think he might be a more commercial/proven sire in NH terms as he has a few decent sorts coming through. A festival winner(which i think will happen) will do wonders.

I'd personally go Robin Des Champs or maybe consider winged love who has sired the likes of twist magic bostons angel and huntball?
