Will be interesting to see how he gets on in the six nations in a couple of weeks.

It's part of a swap for Zebo.

It's already been confirmed by Munster.

I think Howlett is retiring at the end of the season so Munster were looking for a new back three player. Conway never really impressed me but he might just need a steady run of games which he was never going to get with Leinster.

But thats two back three players that Leinster are going to lose come the summer. It's now time for one of the younger lads to make the step up.

Disgracefull, another uber rich multi titled star studded team robbing the blues homegrown talent with multi euro deals & promises of a different lifestyle......................where have the "values" of rugby gone?

In terms of quality, we're not losing much with the departure of Fionn Carr or Andrew Conway.

But we'll be in the manure if we have another injury disrupted season. Can only hope that we have an academy player ready to make the step up or a back three signing in mind.

Just saw this. Confirmed? Christ on a bike... something up in the Leinster ranks?

He was class at schools level but didn't have the physicality for professional rugby in my opinion.

How was he allowed to go? Was he not still under contract to Leinster for another year?

Contracts apparently dont matter nationally if both provinces and player agree to break it.

It's rumored that Van der Merwe is on his way to Stade.

If true then we're about to see how good Leinster's academy really is. Time for Jack Mc Grath to make the step up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,696 ✭✭✭Fishooks13

If we are to buy a winger from Ireland, and I don't think we need one compared to our situation at 9, I'd have liked to have seen us go for TOH

I'd rather Zebo or Gilroy tbh.

I agree. Maybe he'll get more opportunities at Munster. Good luck to him anyway.

Hopefully this will be the making of him, has the talent at least

If Dougie does hang up the boots we could see a Munster backline of:

    9 Murray
    10 Keatley
    11 O Dea
    12 JJ
    13 Earls
    14 Conway
    15 Zebo

That's a hell of a lot of pace

Well it's a strange one, but it's hard to deny his potential and it's clear that he must have a lot of drive if he's willing to leave Leinster a year early in an effort to get more gametime

    Jesus,.it's all happening today.

Well, fair play to Conway, hope he makes a real go of it

Dont break him like you did Jones. We expect him back in full working order.

This will probably mean its full open season on other sides young players. Connacht hide your kids...

Just shows the talent being produced in Ireland.

While he may be down the pecking order in both Leinster and now Munster I think in Munster he has more of a chance of rising up it and also quicker.

For a career I think it is a good move for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

As I reflect on this decision I feel more and more that it might actually be a good thing.

Since Conway's injuries his confidence has been shot. It makes sense for him to try a different environment to see if he can rediscover his spark and cockiness from before injuries.

Get bent! :p Oops, you've already got him... :D

They're all signed up for the next 2 years IIRC, at least Henshaw, McSharry, TOH and Buckley are.

Might work out well for leinster. Penny has a proven history of developing players. 2 years in munster becomes a class player - then off back to leinster

No big deal for leinster right now

If he does break through I don't see him coming back.

Firstly he would have broken through at munster and will presumably be happy where he is as a result. And secondly Leinster will almost certainly have two international standard wingers. Would he want to leave a starting role in munster to come back to fighting for a place? Not like he'll be at a bad team and want the challenge of stepping up a level.

Seeing as he's never lived that far away from his friends/family he might miss home or feel he has unfinished business in his home province and want to prove himself there or he may just get fed up of the constant diet of turnips ;)

There are many reasons why he could want to return and Id hope no Munster fan would begrudge him if two or three years he made that decision. I certainly wouldn't be outraged if Cronin, Ross or Reddan made the choice that they wanted to move back to Munster.

Would Carr have known about this move before deciding to return to Connacht ? Would he have gone if he did ?
Maybe he will come back to Leinster again next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,699 ✭✭✭bamboozle

good chance for Hudson to step up, i've been really impressed any time i've seen him play at any level. big lad and always scoring trys. At this point i reckon Leinster need to make a signing like Conrad Smith or Nonu to add some fizz to its backline.

good opportunity for Dave Kearney to step up or maybe even we'll see Shane Monaghan returning from Gloucester...

He mightn't have known, but the coaches and management would have known.

That's presuming they'd offer him a contract. There has been no evidence that leinster trust/trusted him at all.

McSharry is only signed till the end of next season AFAIK

I'm not sure about Munster signing Leinster players, they haven't exactly done well all that well in the past.

Felix Jones and Niall Ronan could be termed successful.

It didn't work out for Kieran Lewis though.

Whether they do well or not has nothing to do with them coming from Leinster. As with any signing, some will work out, some won't. Nick Williams is a prime example.

Because the players were never that good in the first place??

The likes of Ronan, Dowling, Keatley might not be the most talented but they gave everything they had. Dowling was an extremely underrated wing imo. A pity about the injuries to Jones, he hasn't reached full potential.

It's nice having Munster-born players but the fact is that Leinster have a much wider player base...and they can't all start for them, so it'd be a mistake to let talented players go.

Dowling wasn't really a Leinster though, he hadn't much to do with them. Keatley is probably the best of those mentionned. F Jones is an example, what has he done in a red jersey?

been very good in between spells on the sideline?

That's very fair, but is he one of these players that will spend most of his career on the sideline, (a bit like M Owen), thereby Leinster knew what they were doing offloading him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

There would be some cause for complaint if we signed a top Leinster player and they failed to perform to the same standard but we haven't, so I don't think it's really fair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,977 ✭✭✭✭phog

You say that like he's been very good every time he's worn the red jersey when in fact he hasn't. He certainly has huge potential and I wouldn't like to see him leave but he's had a bit if a curates egg performance for us this season. He has to regain his performances he had just prior to his injury in the lead up to the w/cup

I really doubt that. Chieka apparently was raging when Jones left.

Remember the provinces are branches of the IRFU, it's in nobody's interests that Leinster stick Munster with an injury plagued player. In the end it's the same organisation that gets bad value for money.

No, Leinster were furious when he left. They had to make sacrifices to give him a development contract in the first place

Leinster are starting to remind me of Munster circa 2008. We were on top of the world and then we lost most of our players over the next 4 seasons, now we are a shadow of ourselves.
    Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

except the likes of SOB,kearney, healy, heaslip etc have years left in the tank... plus i cant see see Leinster being as one eyed as the retards down here.

The Munster team was built of very strong Shannon and Cork Con teams from the AIL. When the AIL dipped, Munster realised they had to develop an academy.

However, Leinster have their number 1 player taken away from the capitalism and incompetence from the IRFU. The way Sexton was treated by the IRFU was out of order. I wouldn't be surprised to see Fitzgerald go next.
