Calisthenics in Dublin

Just wondering is anyone involved in or does anyone know of anywhere that does calisthenic training even if its just a group of like minded people who get together to train, specifically they type that involves a lot of training with straight bars for muscle ups etc? Have been watching a lot of footage of people doing this type of training lately and it would seem that all these guys are in phenomenal shape compared to your average gym bunny! Also their strength is unreal! 1 arm pull ups, and horizontal body holds from poles etc!

Edit: Forgot to mention North Dublin would be best but willing to travel if its worthwhile!

Ahh... thats exactly what im looking for! Being realistic though im never going to be able to make it over to Cabinteely park! If i could find something a little closer to home id love to get involved(i'm inPortmarnock!). Serious fitness!

It's not North Dublin but the training in Cabinteely is worth the trip... Try it out

Ah id love to but it would be a mission to get over in the morning i've no car so it would be a nightmare trying to get over! Looks like you're doing quality training though! Do you notice your strength and fitness has improved much with this type of training compared to say a normal 4/5 day split in the gym?

Could you get to Blanchardstown area (Dublin 15)? 3 of us meet near the National Aquatic Centre and we car pool. Would be happy to give you a lift if you can make it to D15 area.

I'm suprised no one is running 1 of these in Malahide Castle. There use to be a group who met up and used the track out there but nothing along the lines of what you're looking for!

Let me look into it, it would certainly be handier to get to then Cabinteely i would think! Cheers! Do you find the training good?

Malahide castle would be perfect but i haven't heard of anyone doing anything of the sort up there!

If your up for coming tomorrow send me a pm and ill give you my number.

I love the training, I changed up my gym routine so I could do more calisthenics work. Would like to do more but gym doesn't have everything I need.

Would the dart not be any use to you? The luas stops beside the park too.

Does the dart stop by the park? Its a good hour+ journey on the dart anyway, maybe when the weather picks up a bit but for the moment it just seems a bit much of a trek! Really want to try get into it if i can though! Have been trying to do muscle ups on the pull up bar in my local gym but i am hopeless ha!

I think you'd have to get dart to Connolly and luas from there to Carrickmines stop. That's the luas stop beside the park. We pick another lad up there. It's a bit of a trek for you alright.

Ah yeah thats a bit much first thing on a Sat morning! Its a shame tho, looking at those videos its exactly what id like to get into, i guess i could just go it solo ha but i'd really need someone who knows what they're doing to show me the ropes to begin! As i said i've tried doing muscle ups in the gym but i cant even get the momentum to get myself up that high on the bar!

There's plenty of tutorials online you could watch, its a lot better training in a group though. The pull up bars in my gym aren't suitable to do muscle ups on either so I only get to do them once a week. Al Kavadlo has a good tutorial on muscle ups. He shows the different progressions you can practice to get your 1st muscle up. I found explosive pull ups very helpful.

Cheers i'll have a look for him on youtube thanks! I agree though having someone else there would definitely be better! Once the weather picks up a bit i might be able to round up another couple of heads but can't see many of my friends braving the elements in this weather when we haven't even a clue what we're at ha!:p

There are new bars in St. Catherine's Park in Lucan. Similar to those in the vid in Cabinteely.

The main group is cancelled until the good weather comes back but I was there yesterday with my son, on our own, I'm a complete beginner though.

? Let me know if this suits.

Count me in. Haven't been a member of a gym since end of November. Just did my workouts in a local playground but going by the pics this place in Ballyfermot has better positioned bars, broadens my routine a bit more.

I was there for about 30 minutes. The cold was getting to me so I left.

First time there, decent set up. None of that zero resistance sh*te.

Pity about all the broken glass.

Would love to give this a go, but feel as a newbie to Calisthenics I would be shameful

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭MattD1349

even all the guys who are on YouTube doing amazing things that make your jaw drop started off at the beginning knowing nothing. They persevered. so can you, there is nothing to lose but time (& body fat).

It's a bit of a trek for me on the bike (D9 area), but I might cycle out next week, anyone up for it?

Dylan you can't be worse than me, I can't even get a pullup. Alot of ppl practice at home ((where ppl can't point and laugh haha). Just practice the basics at home, pushups, do dips with 2 kitchen chairs either side and invest in one of those door gyms. Loads of newbie YouTube vids, I posted few on the SW Dublin page.

I've heard that people should learn the basics for a year before moving onto tricks, although some ppl are eager and want to advance quicker. The most important thing is building up muscle strength and flexibility to allow for minimal injury. I actually sprained my wrist yesterday because I didn't warm up, silly :)

I saw you there, as I entered the park you looked at us and left, hope we didn't scare you off. We are locals but nice people. Like most areas though the playgrounds become havens for low life's in the evening to sit there drinking, apart from that its fine.
We stayed for about an hour, we dressed warm so cold doesnt bother us much.

I hope to be there again next weekend if this virus I have shifts.

Here is what I do in the gym to work on Calisthenics

    5 sets x 10 Dips
    10 sets x 10 pushups
10 sets x 10 chin/pull-ups ( more often that not I have to move to the assisted machine after the first couple of sets and tend to fail easily) - If I fail with them, I'll do some inverted rows on the smith machine to finish it off

I am doing a lot of mobility/dynamic stretching recently and noticed that has help immensely. I am also doing ab/core work on top

There is a French lad in my gym and do 200 muscle-ups(not a typo, yes 200!) in a 2 hour session session, makes me feel weak :(

Currently goals: Do a muscle-up and do a full range of motion pistol squat

Is this activity still taking place. Where is it exactly? If it is still on I would be interested.

    Thank you.
