Hi there, just wondering what happens when you go for the NCT and the car is overdue the NCT by 18 months. I've been using the car (I know, shouldn't have) I have booked in soon for the test, but I'm just wondering if I will have to back date payment, or if it'll just be the normal 55 euro?

How old is the car? If it's over 10 years you'll have to do 2 NCTs to get it legal again.

    No, you don't.

If you are more than a full expiry over, they do not make you do two.

It's an 03 car. Well if I get a few months being legal on the road I don't mind too much. I was just hoping I didn't have to pay double or something on the day.

If you were to park it up for 3 months and then do the NCT, you'd get a 15 month cert. If you do the NCT now, you'll be given a 6 month cert. Either way it'll be €55.

Are the NCT crowd under no obligation to report people who have not had their cars NCTed for a large amount of time.

Staggered at why they wouldn't be doing this.

Sure it could have been parked up for 18 months, who knows?

What would be the point? The person may have only just bought the car, the owner may have been out if the country, they may have been sick, the car may have needed major work done to it, there's a multitude of reasons why a car may not have been tested. And who would they report it to? Would you have guards waste their time investigating why someone may not have tested their car in along time and them trying to prove a case?
