What's wrong with my car!!

    Hey!

I've a 1.4 diesel corolla D4D. About 3 days ago I was hearing a noise coming from the front of the car, like a plate grinding or something was dragging on the road. It seemed worse when going slow, although still there at full speed.

I was booking it in to get serviced at the weekend - long overdue! However, last night was driving down the motorway when the car went bang :-( heard a snap and the car lost gears. Got the tow truck out and we managed to get it into first and drive it up. Came to the garage and he was driving it in when it went bang again and it was like the car seized no gear, wheels wouldn't turn. The mechanic replied "it's f•••••d!" :-( waiting now to find out the verdict, he thinks it may be the clutch & gearbox but won't know until later. If it is how much should I expect to pay??

That's a tricky one. Personally I don't think the car should have been driven on or off the truck and that further damage was done after the initial damage

If you're lucky, it's a transmission problem and not the engine itself. I'd phone around a few scrapyards to see if you can get your hands on a used one.

engine/gearbox mount? by the sounds of it the gearbox mount went thus allowing the engine to rest on the steering rack not allowing you to steer!! the bangs could have been each bolt snapping!!

Just rang the garage, hasn't had much time to look at it. Have to ring back at 3pm. He mentioned something about links seizing...

Just hope it's not too big a problem & not too expensive.

I bought the car in 2011 from a garage when apparently a new gearbox & clutch went into it.

Turned out it is the gearbox...:-(

    Sorry to hear that.
See if you can source a gearbox to replace that one. The mechanic may have a few contacts too.

Sorry to hear the problem. Just maybe if a new gearbox and clutch were put in 2011 if there is proof and if it were a main dealer I think their parts have 2 year warranty. Sounds like a longshot and also you don't seem so sure it was done, odd for it go in 2 years if it was. I dont know much about cars .
