Hi everyone. I'm thinking of buying a newer car and was looking for some advice.

A 2006ish Corolla 5 door seems to topping my list at the moment. I was wondering if anyone has one or what opinions are about that car? Other cars I had been considering were a VW Polo, Seat Ibiza or Ford Fiesta.

I'm not as hung up on the initial cost of the car, it's my insurance that I'm trying to keep down! I have a 2001 Golf at the moment and my insurance is very reasonable but quotes I've been getting for newer versions are crazy  Insurance costs seem to have ruled out an Astra or Focus unfortunately.

Any advise would be great guys, thanks :D

I probably should have mentioned that I'll be doing a mixture of city and motorway driving but my commute is about a 40 mile round trip daily...I still think in old money :) so would diesel be the better choice?

    Kia Cee'd

You seem to want the reliability of a Corolla and the style of a mainstream non jap car, so i would be all over a Cee'd as if i needed a boring A to B car it's what would have (Once i didn't get lost and arrive home with an 8 series not remembering the last 2-3 hours) :p

    What's the budget?

Ooh I hadn't thought of a Kia Cee'd actually. I'll look into it, thanks :)

My budget is between €5-8000 roughly. I'm fairly flexible. Obviously the cheaper the better but I could stretch to the top end of that.

    (If its not sold)

Thanks but I'm still at the 'research stage' at the moment. Won't be wanting to buy the car for a month or two. Thank you though :)

No problem, just to be clear I'm not selling it, I was just car shopping last week and came across it.

Stay well clear of guys like this trying to sell you stuff would be my advice.

Make up your own mind.....but dont listen to anyone on the internet trying to offer you a bargain.

Thanks for the advice but he was just mentioning a car he'd seen. Doubt there was a profit in it for him! :)

Ok so I was comparing insurance quotes for both the Corolla and the Cee'd. The Cee'd is working out about 2.5 times more expensive. Does that seem right...?

Seems a bit odd alright. Do a Hyundai i30 and see what happens

The i30 is working out about the same as the Cee'd but the Corolla is by far the cheapest

    Very strange!

Is the corolla working out way cheaper than your golf to insure?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 440 ✭✭SillyBeans

Ok scratch that. I checked a different comparison website and now they're all within about €15 of each other! Crisis averted! :)

    Including focus and astra?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 440 ✭✭SillyBeans

Nope, they're both about double the insurance of the other cars. I'm gonna phone some companies directly to check for sure though.

I'd say you will struggle to find better value than in the Ceed or i30.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 440 ✭✭SillyBeans

Yeah I hadn't even thought of a Ceed before but it's looking like a decent option. I think it's a much nicer interior than the Corolla too, never liked the Toyota steering wheel!

A luna spec corolla is quite a nice car though. They did an 06 spec as a run out model. Always liked them.
