I'm not into Rolex, it might just be me but they seem a bit dated at this point. The look just doesn't appeal to me.

I think they've become a victim of their own success in many ways S. They became a bit "chavy" in the publics mind because of that. Not the only quality name to have done so. Burberry springs to mind. Still I reckon they have had some gorgeously designed watches. Movements not so much. Funny of the few I'd rate their foray into the really high end quartz back in the day would be one.

Just an idea folks, whatabout a thread with watch ads from the past, or current(and if you've a funky DeLorean, the future :)). What do you think Deep Thought? Thread hijack? :)

I wasn't really making a statement about the watch...merely posting an old ad that I though was cool

    Nice Idea Wibbs..

I can tell you that the Rolex GMT Master is an infinitely more individual choice to the bland Breitling Aerospace Titanium (Quartz) that many pilots sport these days. It is almost uniform.

    Changed title :)

Some of you may remember I picked up a NOS birth year watch last year and also managed to find an original magazine advert on the bay for the same watch from the same year :o

A 1974 Quartzmatic LCD digital watch. Was $195 new back then

    OK some really early ads from the early days of the wristwatch;

Omega line up from around 1917("for the town, for the front" gives the war footing bit away)
    237968.jpg

Post great war watch and one I'd looooove. First real attempt at a waterproof case well before the Rolex "Oyster", screwdown crown and all. Mad money if you can even find one
    237972.jpg

Early "aviator" watch, though more a case of "Hmmm how else can we flog these off?" :)
    237970.jpg

And finally actual Pilots watches from the 1930's(including bombardier's stopwatch at bottom right).
    237971.jpg
Judging by the drawing of the pilot and it looking like the gear and cockpit of a German Heinkel bomber there may be a hint there... I'd like no. 734 looks well cool and very moderne.

Looking at the Omega ad and the second last of the ladies' watches; is that leopard skin or tortoiseshell. If it's the former does this mean that Omega invented the chav :D?

Enamel cloisonne I reckon. I've also seen same on mens watches from the period. Excessive bling isn't a new thing.:D
