    Hi all,

There seems to be a bewildering different types of coal on the market.

Could anyone kindly explain what the differences are please. So I can compare prices and deals. I'm very much new to fires, never had them as a child so wouldnt know the diff in good or bad coal.

    Thanks

The first thing you need to figure out is your local council restrictions as in can you burn real coal or do you have to use smokeless coal.Your local coal merchant should be able to tell you this. After that its down to experiences some coals burn better than others but you will find this out by trial and error also ask your local coal merchant what is the most popular brand they sell. Also what are you burning it in an open fire, stove, range that may affect your choice of coal

Its not just names you need to compare, its suppliers. I picked up a bag from a few different places. I found one that did good high heat Polish coal for £5.50 for 25kg and stuck with that. It got cheaper in larger quantities.

The closer to the border you get the cheaper it is. That place is at the Tamnamore roundabout neat The Moy, County Tyrone. In Newry there is a place that does good Polish coal for £5.50 for 25kg too but it isn't cheaper for bigger loads.

    Where abouts are you?

Im in Limerick these times i guess its just another example of how were getting screwed south of the border.Granted you can get cheaper stuff around here but you might as well buy a bag of stones from a garden centre as they'd burn better than the cheap stuff
