    Okay here goes ...

The handle/threads or whatever of our hot tap for the kitchen sink went bust mid flow and we were left with a torrent of water gushing out with no way to stop it.

My housemate - like me a layman at plumbing - fiddled around with the two red valves in the hot press cupboard upstairs to see would it do anything, which it didn't. We read online that a hot and cold valve should have been under the sink itself for the taps but we found nothing. Later by sticking my hand way in I found just one tap handle under the sink that cut off the flow to the damaged tap [the cold tap still worked fine].

Fast forward a few hours later and we now have no water at all. Obviously this is down to my housemate fiddling with the red valves but my question is how do we get the water back?

I've tried twisting both valves counterclockwise, both clockwise and still nothing. Is there an act to this or should I just wait? Which way should the valves be twisted?

The tap under the sink is still switched off. Would this interfere with the process of getting the water back online?

Sorry for sounding like such a ditz with all of this. Any help is greatly, super appreciated :).

The valve under your sink is probably the mains. You've shut off the supply to your attic tank and its probably empty now

I've switched the tap under the sink back on. The toilet seems to be filling up slowly so I think you're right!

Only problem is the hot water tap is now gushing out endlessly. The tap just spins clockwise endlessly and won't shut off. If I press down on it hard the water intensity will loosen up for a moment but then it's back straight away.

I've tried taking the tap off and turning it off with a wrench without the handle but nothing.

Is there any quick way to make this stop before getting a plumber out to fix the tap?

    Thanks.

General rule for gate valves(round red tops) is LEFT IS LOOSE RIGHT IS TIGHT.As for the lack of water it may be an airlock, which sometimes can be remedied by forcing water back up the spout of of a mixer tap (2 taps with a shared spout usually found at kitchen sink and/or bath tub)In your case you still have mains water at the kitchen sink so I would start here and force mains water up the hot side.Did you reopen the valve that you found behind the press?Another possibility is the 2 valves you closed have seized or are stuck closed, try to apply a little more pressure to them when you try to open them

Left is loose, right is tight, both are counter clockwise as I'm being told is the way to do it :).

The water is back now with everything but the electric shower [might take awhile I'm guessing]. The only real problem is the kitchen hot tap which won't turn off :(.

If you took the head off and turned the brass cog clockwise and still nothing then your best chance is to turn off hot water in hotpress and remove the pipe under the sink from the tap itself and put a blank on it. But I'm guessing you don't have any blanks. If your near chadwicks/ heat merchants or even homebase or woodies ask for a 1/2 351
