Hi all, travelling to Cairo in May and plan to spend 5 days there. After that I'd like to visit Luxor and then spend a week at the beach.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

definitely visit the markets (Khan al-Khalili bazaar is brilliant) they're so good. Also Salah El Din Citadel is really interesting and has a great view.

The pyramids are good for a look but beware of shisters looking to do you out of money on perfumes and papyrus (and if you're female trying to buy you for camels - i think it's a bit of fun they have with the tourists. The camel ride was good too.

The Egyptian museum is good lots of interesting bits and bobs, crossing roads is a nightmare but there is lots of tourist police to help you out, just ask, mostly they're nice.

There's a holiday palace for some king or another that has amazing gardens but I can't remember the name of it now.

We weren't part of a tour or anything so that gave us a lot of freedom, but as a female (and as much as it pains me to say it) I was glad that we traveled with a male because lots of the men just preferred to deal with a man, there was a bit of a culture shock tbh.

Check out: http://wikitravel.org/en/Cairo or grab a lonely planet guide. There's so much to see and do there, it's a bit grotty but I loved it. Try the different foods as there're so so so many different and wonderful things to try but don't drink the tap water. Talk to locals in so far as you can and ask them what they'd recommend. Oh also King Farouks Palace is also definitely worth an afternoon.

    Enjoy.

You might get more views and responses if you post in the Independent travelling section. It will be very hot at that time.

5 days is perfect for Cairo. Pyramids, museum, Khan al Khalli bazaar, Dashur and Saqqara and Mephis on a day trip (just hire your own taxi), there's also a complex of mosques - can't remember the name.

Luxor - Kharnak, Luxor temples, Valley of Kings and Queens, great museums.

I think the beach is over rated unless you want to go diving or snorkling. It will take you a hours to get there from Luxor or Cairo. If you just want to relax and sunbath there are plently of nice resort type hotels in Luxor itself.

How long do you have in total? I'd recommend taking a short cruise down to Aswan and maybe visiting Abu Simbel on the Sudan border. Amazing site. And Aswan is so un touristy compared to Luxor that it's a welcome relief.

Another area popular with tourists is Dahab, Sharm and Mt. Sinai.
