You can check courses here LINKY.
Yes it measures the straight line distance from when you press the button till when you press it again.
Dont have one myself, but reviews are quite good. You can also look at the Bushnell watch and there are a few other watch GPS's available.

I have the s3 courtesy of mrs claus and i am loving it so far. I play in Shannon and the only issue i would have is that on the twelfth ( par three) i think the yardage is definitely out. As far add i know there is a facility with garmin whereby you can email them your concern and they update accordingly. Nice handy piece of kit though, one glance at your wrist and your good to go...

    Here you go
, bottom right of this page, I've added over 20courses in the last 18months, they get updated quarterly

Ebay is probably your best bet, or even adverts.ie

Best purchase I made last year. I'm loving the certainty of yardage. (I play on a course with metres and have to add 10% all the time) yardage option suits me better. No stepping out from nearest marker. Worth 160 I paid in halpenny's in December.

Right so I now have an s1 watch bought secondhand on eBay. I stood on the 1st tee of my local club ennis and it located satellites but not the club where I was.it seemed to have only 5 courses loaded...how do I load a course. My course is ennis and it is on the garmin list on their website.I though they were preloaded....

Connect watch to PC by taking USB connection from plug and update the courses from web site-

    https://my.garmin.com/maps/chooseDeviceType.htm?

Did you buy from outside Eurpoe? I think they are region specific so a US one will not work here etc.

Should be ok though, the five courses it was showing were probably the ones within 30 miles approx. Most likely your home course was only added after that watch was last updated. (Fingers crossed)
