Any idea what angus calves are making at the moment?
I'm looking to buy 10 or 12 bulls or heifers in the next few weeks.

saw a bb bull calf last week in the mart about 2 weeks old . one made €255 other € 335

As far as i could see calf prices are back 30-45% on this time last year

    Had a lad offer me

FR bull calves at €100 (British Fresian)
    Frx " €80-90
    JeyxFr €50

    * and he said those prices will drop as the flood of calves come on*

When is this flood expected....was going to buy some weanlings tomorrow. Am looking at chx recon id be doing well @ 2.50 average..

Need 20-25 strong ones as they will have to keep grass down. So ideal weight 350kg's.

The flood would be in the trade in "sucks" rather then weanlings...
Should be going well in two/three weeks

I wasnt far out, calves are well back with the twice i was in the mart.

Last year 1000s hit the marts early Feb. ANd i think last year so many lads got caught with expensive calves.

    I got myself 60x 20kg bags of milk powder. €300 :D

Its legit completely. Its end of batch stuff and i think your man works with Lakeland thats getting it for me through an uncle. Im going to give it a go, along with added minerials and see what happens.

He is getting me the make up ingredients but off his head he spooled out the fat % and protein etc.

He said lots of lads get it off them and feed to calves but only draw back is you have to get the full pallet.

spoke with a guy who bought 10 whitehead suck calves in march with the intention of breeding from them, he sold 4 of them in the mart this week and made 20 each on what he had bought them for:eek: makes you think doesnt it

No :o. Lads were giving €440 for BWH heifers calves(10days old) last spring. At what point did they everthink they were going to make money out of a calf at that price? the €20 wount cover the mart fees, let alone anything else

I bet your bb bull calf from yesterday wount leave a massive amount either

Last year i had AA heifers and Fr(British Fr) bulls. But the Fr bulls left €200 euro more a head than the AA . So it comes to the point, lovely feild of fantastic looking animals with not much money out of them or a field of animals that will leave you a sustainable profit.

A neighbour of mine mentioned he had some whitehead heifer calves two weeks old, and he wanted to know if I was interested. Any one got an idea of what they would be worth? They would be out of good british friesan cows and would be ideal for suckling. I dont mind paying a couple of quid extra if i buy calves privately because I know they have received plenty of beastings and it also saves me a day in the mart.

€230 - €270 depending age. As it was 2 weeks ago these calves could be 4 weeks old

What age/weight do you sell at.iakill?

I sell at 18months old (normally back end of the year) . Fr bulls at 17months with no meal were tipping 520-545kg.

I must have sold at one of the worst possibble weeks aright but i was out of grass. Plan to put up another shed and try finish them.

Roughly how much did you make for them what condition were they in. However I be slipping away from the winter finishing.

On the price of calves they will take a hit this year as a lot of fellas have empty pockets after last year I think that most fancy coloured calves will be back 100/head compare to last year WH and AA back 70-80 on average and fresians the same.

Bought 4 lovely Weanlens in Ennis last week.
    Heifers Char and Limo X roughly 200kg from €425 - €450
All were reared from cows!! Cheap as chip compared with calves!! The best of it was that there was week old calves making €400 in the other ring at the same time :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,881 ✭✭✭mf240

Hard to go wrong there grecco. was there many in it?

What kind of calves were making 400?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,410 ✭✭✭bbam

    Went to Carigallen yesterday.
    About 100-120 on offer.

    Fr bulls made from €55-€150.
Thought the stronger bulls at that might be good value but I've never considered rearing Fr bulls.

    Hex made from €250-€450.
The €450 was for an AI bred calf to me it didn't look anything special.

Continental calves made strong money. €375. -€500

I thought the Fr bulls were well back on last spring but I thought there was too much money being paid for most others.

Complete and utter madness, you should be paid to take them type of calves

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭charityboy

crazy money for them, they would be a gamble if you got them for nothing ,costs the same to rear them as a br fresian would be only worth half the money on day of sale

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,735 ✭✭✭lakill Farm

Did you see the AAX heifer calf that only made €150 and the auctioneer was trying to sell her as a aaxBB . Something odd that she only got one offer?

OH was with me and she wount let me buy anything.

What I did notice odd was a pen with 4 calves that had obviously been tagged that
Morning. You could see blood on the tags and they were constantly flicking their ears. This was both tags and no separate BVD tag either.
How would that work with current rules on movement regarding BVD results prior to movement ???

this year the bvd tag is incorporated in to one of the yellow tags, so only 2 tags , thank god

    Yes I know.
But how we're they just tagged for going to the mart on Saturday morning??
I thought they couldn't move until a clear result first?
And they were all obviously just tagged.

can the sample be taken with out using the tag, or where they born before january the first?

I don't think so. These calves must have been registered as being born before January 1st so they did not require a test!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,410 ✭✭✭bbam

I had a good look and the tags in each ear were different, one had a black and one a grey shaft through the ear.
I'm presuming they were BVD tags.

I suppose they could have been registered as Dec calves but they certainly weren't. 2-3 weeks old.

A handy video from AHI for anyone who still hasn't ordered the BVD tags and is wondering what's involved:

Don't have much spare time for heading to the mart but my father was out on Monday and picked me up 3 Limousine heifers out of friesan cows. Average age about six months, average price 445...was happy with that, it makes it hard to justify buying a suck calf at 300.

What sort of weight were they buncha fives for the €445? (Great name;))
I can't see any value in buying sucks to tell you the truth with the price reared weanlings are making, the online downside i see is that you might bew buying grief with the older cattle...
