What legal right does a Manager have to ask one to request permission before seeking a GP visit within office hours, where that condition may affect performance also?

it would really depend on all the factts. It would be normal to inform line manager of a visit to GP, it would also be best if visit could be arranged for outside working hours. Your employer pays you to be in work not in your Doctors, but as most GP's opperate 9 to 5 that may not always be possible.

But in an emergancy situation, while it would be best to inform someone of where a employee is gone of course that may not always be possible.

Things like this come down to whats reasonable, if i was a manager and some employee of mine had a pre arranged doctors apointment of which no one in the company was aware and that employee just headed off without telling anyone I would think that is a disciplinarymatter.

What legal right does a manager have to ask one to request permission before seeking a visit to a cinema, or a shop or anywhere else during work hours??? One and the same I'd imagine....if you're sick/unwell to the point it's going to affect performance, take a sick day and go in your own time!!

Edit - just re-read that and it's way way harsher than I intended. If it's an appointment, let them know in advance and if they can spare you then fair enough, but I don't think they'd be under any obligation legally to do so (in my very very humble opinion at least!)

If it was for example a pregnancy test, the OP might not want everyone to know their business just yet. There are occasions when one is not visibly unwell that a visit to a doctor is needed. It may be best if OP takes a day's holiday, if they don't want to draw unwanted attention to themselves.

Myself and the better half are in exactly that situation at the moment (yay :D)....a few days notice of the appointments (little white lies - dentists etc etc) and there's never an issue, or day/half days holidays for scans etc.
If she's sick and unable for work, then unfortunately it's just a sick day that has to be taken, no two ways about it really.
