You can get a Freesat branded satellite receiver that will get you the British channels ok. If you get the Freesat+ box, that will allow you to record and pause live TV, just like Shy+.

It won't get you RTE, you will need to either buy a Saorview approved TV with compatible tuner or else buy a Saorview set top box.

You can buy combo boxes which allow you to get satellite and Saorview on the one box if you are more into that.

Do the combo boxes allow you to record and series link

Yes some allow you to record ok, not 100% sure on Series Link though.

Read some of the threads on here about the Ferguson Ariva's. They are the popular ones.

The TRIAX combo box allows you to record on a USB device e.g. Memory stick. You can also record on Sat channel while watching a terrestrial channel and vice versa.

I doubt the combo boxes would support series link or a full 7 day epg for the freesat channels. The data that relies on is specific to the freesat/sky platform and afaik they only make now/next information available in a format the free to air boxes would expect. The combo boxes can record, but I'd imagine they require you to manually set up timers for anything that isn't the current/next program.

Freesat+ boxes, which would support series link, don't sell with dvb-t tuners as they aren't meant to be used outside the uk and they don't expect people who can get terrestrial transmissions to really be buying them.

I know some people are using linux based boxes, like the vu+, which can get a full epg from freesat. Most of the vu+ boxes don't have dvb-t tuners either but you can get cheap dvb-t usb tuners (< €10 ones) and add back in the Irish channels that way. Generally those boxes are more expensive though (though the do generally have a hdd built in, instead of requiring the user to add their own as a lot of the combo boxes do). The vu+duo2 is meant to be coming out some time soon, and that is going to have customizable tuners and be running XBMC (or so the rumors go, which is an opensource application, so it is possible somebody might eventually patch proper series link into that).
