Boiler not starting

    Hi there

My boiler is not starting all the time, when I open the nut on the side of the pump and wait till water comes out, refasten the nut and reset the boiler it usually starts.

I had a plumber friend who put some inhibitor into the tank to clean out the rads a week or so ago and since then I have had this hassle. I am not sure if the system has air running through it and it is causing the pump to stop?

This morning it didn't start again so I did the usual with the pump and reset the boiler and it kicked in for a few seconds and cut out again.

I got a real smell of oil off the exhaust too which i don't normally get. I am hoping this is down to my oil being almost gone and fumes going through, I couldn't check the tank because I had to go to work

I am only getting my head around plumbing and any help on this would be great, the boiler is similar to this model, any help would be gratefully appreciated

My system has the same burner and the pump isn't great at pulling oil when the oil is low. I would fill up the tank then try again a few times.

Aye, will try that, not great though for all its bells and whistles if the boiler behaves like that. I wonder is that a feature as to not airlock the system when all the fuel is gone.

I am determined to understand the workings of this boiler :) thanks for your help

Yea that's it. There's also a hex screw under the red plastic cover that you can undo slightly and then start the burner to release air but you don't always need to.

Just be careful not to burn out the pump by trying to start it on an empty tank.

Does the red light come on on the front if the burner when the burner stops? If so press the button once and say exactly what happens and what sounds you hear

From memory it kicks in for roughly 15 seconds and then just cuts out, not much noise really like a motor winding down I suppose

So when you push the red button, there's noise for roughly 12 seconds, the boiler fires for maybe 5 seconds then all stops?

Sounds like a photocell problem to me. Might be gone or might be dirty. If its cleaned its only a temporary fix. You'll have to find out why it's getting dirty in the first place. Best bet is get an Oftec engineer to look at it
