Just thought I'd chance my arm here as I am broke and can't afford a garage.

Anyway my 2003 Micra isn't starting and I'm trying to weed out whether it's battery, immobiliser or alternator.

So the car hadn't been used in a while and now the car isn't starting, at all. When it should kick over it just clicks but all the electrics will come on like radio etc.
But when it is jumped it will run fine until it's turned off again.

Pretty sure it's alternator but just thought I'd see if anyone could confim before I went garage(my other car is on the blink too so I'm broke!)

Also, if it's the alternator, how much can I expect to pay?
Thanks so much for your help!
    java.

The click is the starting motor trying to engage but without enough power from the battery to do so. if it's been lying up for a while this may be the only issue. Either way you're gonna need a new battery so try that first. ;)

Tried the battery and it worked fine for two days. Went to open it again and it wouldn't open with the key do. We opened it by the keyhole on the passenger door and tried to start it and nothing, no dash lights except for a flicker of the airbag light!!

    Urgh!!!

one way to check an alternator is if you get the car started open up the bonnet and listen for any squeeling coming from it also if its getting very hot while engines running its another sign its failing
