Just got this email from Sky.

    We've changed Sky Go –
but we're giving you something extra

    Hello

We've changed the way Sky Go works, which means you can no longer download movies and shows to your PC, Mac or laptop to watch offline. You're still able to stream live and on demand though, at no extra cost.

To give you an even better offline viewing experience, there's new Sky Go Extra

    • Register up to four devices, including mobiles and selected tablets, and download to them all

    • Then watch offline and on the move – no more signal interruptions or buffering

We're giving it to you free for 3 months. And if you love it as much as we think you will, it's easy to keep and great value at just €6 extra a month. If it's not for you, don't worry, we'll automatically remove it on
    21 April.

To enjoy Sky Go Extra, just update the Sky Go app or go to go.sky.com

You'll see the new download feature there waiting for you.

    The Sky Team

Well it was free up to now. And you could download to watch again:mad:

It's still free, the charge is to be able to download content to a mobile device so it can be viewed when off line, if you don't pay you just use it as before . But you can now no longer download onto your desktop to watch, you'll have to stream it instead.

    That's my understanding anyway.

So basically they will push people towards illegal downloads. If it is €6 a month, makes the sky sub incredibly expensive now.

But I don't see how ? Sky Go will remain won't it, the additional fee is to download to a mobile device. The inability to download to your desktop won't make much of a difference.

but it is if you download to your mobile device to watch later. If you download in an illegal way to watch later......thats free and easily available in many ways. That's what im getting at. I've a foreign sub and a sky sub, I loved the sky sub for these extras (and live cricket), but as a family have found that the foreign sub is used more than sky now. The hd charge is a huge turnoff for me now. There's a lot that can be done with 110€ a month now. That 110€ will soon increase with the latest rises, then another 6€ for the sky go mobile, its gone into crazy money territory. Bye bye sky, then ill have foreign subs, saorview and UK fta in kitchen and living room, saorview and fta in bedrooms.

But none of that has to do with Sky and the new feature of downloading programmes. You couldn't download program from Sky Go desktop to a mobile legally anyway.

seems I've missunderstood. It must be a new thing they've introduced. So I currently download to my laptop to watch later via sky desktop. So I still can and there won't be a charge like now, that's a relief.

Nope, you have to stream to your desktop as you watch it, they're removed the option of downloading altogether. You can download for the new fee to a mobile device, otherwise you stream as you had done up until now.

No interest in the Extra service but can you now stream normal sky go to four devices? It's not the clear from the mailshot

    heres the answer:

How many devices can I use to watch Sky Go?

With Sky Go, you can watch TV on the move on up to two devices. You can double the number of devices on which you can use Sky Go by upgrading to Sky Go Extra, allowing you to download programmes to watch offline on up to four devices.

Is anyone's sky go app not working now? I was directed to update the app but after updating all I see now is on demand and downloads but the the on now is blank. These people are going to give me flucking stroke.

Just updated the app as well and the "on now" option is blank.....

Lets just hope it's a temporary glitch

Just a word of warning, be careful if you try out the free Sky Go Extra trial as by trying it out you are signing up to it and it is up to you to cancel, giving 31 days notice, if you don't they will automatically charge you. From the FAQs
    2) What is Sky Go Extra?
Sky Go Extra allows you to download TV shows and Movies to watch offline without a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G signal and register up to four devices. For Sky TV customers only, content available depends on your package. Sky Movies Pack required to download movies. Two month free trial offer available until 31 March 2013. Visit the Sky Go website for more information. After your free trial you will continue to receive Sky Go extra at £5 per month extra unless you provide 31 days' notice of cancellation.

I know i should have known better, but i got caught. As the 'On now' wasn't working I was playing around with the other sections and downloaded a video but didn't see this before I did so now I have to remember to cancel on time :(

    Edit:
Now I see in their email they say they'll automatically remove it:

I used to download films for watching on planes or in hotels but won't be able to anymore. I'm certainly not giving them and extra €6 to do so.

This is crazy, Sky are increasing prices and removing existing services, in the middle of a big recession. Like others I sometimes download a movie to watch when away from home.

At the start (a few years ago) our internet was also quite dodgy, and so it took maybe 4 hours to download a 2 hour film. In this case it was IMPOSSIBLE to watch a film live.

I also used to download films last thing at night. This prevented our internet from slowing during peak hours, when others were at home, and also when the internet is generally slower for everyone. Now this will not be possible.

I was also helping Sky by not overloading their systems during peak times.

One workaround for people with dodgy internet might be to start watching the film, go away, and come back after 10 minutes and slide the time slider back to the start. This then gives you a 10 minute buffer for dodgy internet. However if you internet is quite dodgy then this will not work.

If you are hoping to surf the net while watching films then expect to be dissapointed from April onwards. They have some cheek. I can tell you in April I will be ringing up to cancel unless they give me free "extra"

I only spoke to them today and since I'm such a lovely person the price rise will not apply to me (after I told them I was leaving, and waited a week for them to contact me back)

I would recommend everyone ring and cancel unless they give you free "extra".

As others have said films are easy to download illegally. No restrictions, no "5 days left to view", no payments, no change in terms and conditions etc.

was just putting sky go on for the kids to watch, Beware, seems you get signed up automatically for sky go extra, i checked my registered devices, all where filled in with the same laptop (I only have 1 windows 7 laptop), instead of the heading over the managed device of "Sky go", it had "Sky go extra" over all 4 of the same devices. Ive deleted 3 of the enteries, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Ive signed nothing about joining sky go extra, so this is well out of order. So if your using sky go, check your registered devices.
