Just seen this story and I can't believe my eyes.

Kerry County Council will write to Mr Shatter, asking him to allow garda to issue permits that would allow people drive home from their local pub.

Cllr Healy-Rae claimed that rural people were "travelling very minor roads... with very little traffic" and "have never killed anyone".
    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/healyrae-calls-for-drinkdrive-permits-in-rural-areas-3361629.html

Public representatives are calling for Drink Driving to be made legal??? Even if this never goes anywhere, should these people still have any say or involvement in a public office or any sort??

Mr Healy-Rae, who also owns a pub in Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, said it would benefit people who are "looking at four walls" and could help prevent depression and suicide.
Furthermore looking at this statement I would say he knows nothing about the suicide and depression.

    From Alcohol Action Ireland http://alcoholireland.ie/alcohol-policy/policy-documents-1/:
Although many factors are involved in suicide, patterns of problem alcohol use contribute significantly to the high rate of suicide among young Irish men in particular.

Will these permits be for specific areas and will large, brightly-coloured signs be put up around these areas warning normal folk to stay away?

Or could a group of these looking-at-four-walls people not organise a designated driver?

After all the families and lives that have been ruined by drink driving to propose something like this is insensitive at best and insane at worst. There should be no let up in the drink driving laws and society needs to hammer home the fact that it is completely unacceptable.

I have sympathy for the 'poor oul fellas' at home on their own but this just isn't the answer

Can you not go for a drink and not drink alcohol in rural Ireland? I didn't think the Healy Rae's could sink any lower in my estimation, but turns out they can! Possibly one of the stupidest wastes of time of the local government system.

Absolutely shocking suggestion to put forward. Just beyond belief, I dont think there is any justification whatsoever.

If it's the company they need and a people to socialize, can this not be done over a cup of tea or orange juice??

I would have imagined Ireland got way past the stage where the only way to socialize was to go get plastered in your local!

So many families are suffering as a result of the drink culture and road deaths associated with it.

He also owns a Plant Hire company- the sort of machinery that would be used to pull cars out of ditches.

I can see his logical thinking.

Yea, the Healy Reas, publicans propose this measure, it was also supported by three other publicans on the Council. These are the the ultimate Kerry Joke!

Did you not hear him on the radio about an hour ago? He sounded like the biggest fool going, he couldn't even string a sentence together, I'm willing to bet he was drunk.

    Classic lines such as
ah shur, these drivers are often professionals such as truck, tractor, and coach drivers, they never broke the law in their lives and wont be causing any harm on these quiet rural roads only going about 30mph! 2 or 3 drinks is grand

I've said it before, there should be an aptitude test before you're allowed to vote.
There should also be one before you're allowed to put yourself forward as a Cllr.
