Amiko Alien 2 or Golden Media Triplex?

From what I've seen somewhere tonight these are essentially the same hardware, just with a different badge. I gather that once you get into the world of downloading new images you are wiping away whatever firmware & sofrware came with the box, so the only original thing that remains is the hardware.

One thing I did spot is that the Golden Media box - http://www.ebay.ie/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=181067044942#ht_6864wt_1397 - comes with DVB-T2 while the Alien only seems to have DVB-T. Obviously this is a hardware difference, but I gather the rest of the box is the same. Is this correct?

Since (as far as I know) Irish DTT only uses DVB-T, is there any benefit (or harm for that matter) in getting the DVB-T2 tuner? I'm on the coast in Dublin, but only have an aerial pointed towards Three Rock. Is there anything of value that I might in theory get from the UK on terrestrial that I'm not already going to be getting on satellite anyway?

And finally, I'm a little out of touch on the technology side. If I got the Golden Media box from Spain, would I end up not able to watch any DTT at all, at all, at all because of some hard coding or UHF instead of VHF or regional issue? Or is a DVB-T tuner in one country the same as one in another country?

    Thanks,

    z

It's a dual boot box, Enigma 2 doesn't replace Spark, you can boot to either.

There is no Enigma image for the newer one with the T2 tuner and the HDMU team have announced that there will be no more updates for the HDMU image for the time being as there is no T2 tuner driver available yet.

The Saorview spec changed on the 1st Jan, boxes now require T2 for Saorview certification just like the UK, meaning it's very possible they will use it at some stage down the road.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a reason to avoid the Golden Media box? It's just that the Amiko triple tuner box seems to be the hot topic at the moment and I haven't seen as much on the Golden Media one. If they're essentially the same box though then it would make sense to investigate them both.

I'm not up to speed with HDMU, but I assume it's another image or some sort of extension or skin to Enigma or Spark. Assume for the moment that I'm happy to be in a position safely behind the bleeding edge and not at it . . . if I have a T2 tuner is there some config (like, hopefully out of the box) that will work for the moment while the boffins work on getting the driver working for HDMU?

HDMU is a team that have a version of Enigma for the Alien2, it is the most stable of all the images available, many of us here are using it on the Alien2. The box will work on the default software Spark, but it will be a few weeks before their version of Enigma supports the T2 tuner. It really comes down to whether you want to go with Enigma straight away or are willing to put up with Spark for while.

looking at both these boxes. Is the Golden Media triplex a cheaper version of the Amiko Alien 2? Does it need different versions of E2 & images? Theres not alot that I could find on the Golden for support. Maybe because it's the same as the Alien?
    Found this link http://camsharing.forumitaliano.com/t759-enigma2-pkteam-for-alien-2-golden-media-triplex.
Made me think they are the same.
