Just wondering if it is possible to get an interior designer that would work with you room by room rather than a whole house altogether.

Also anyone know of interior designers that have a good flair for farmhouse/countrystyle houses. Thanks

    Hi Oldstyle1,

I'm not sure if you managed to find an interior designer to help, but maybe you could tackle this yourself, especially if you are doing one room at a time? Two years ago I bought an 1870's cottage in Dublin and I've SLOWLY been doing it up myself. An elderly man lived there previously, so it needed a lot of work! 8)

From my own experience, there are a few key bits of furniture for each room, if you want that farmhouse look.
For my kitchen, I stone cladded my chimney and added in a wood burning stove with a reclaimed timber bean above. This turned out great. Also a large farmhouse table and wooden chairs/benches look good too! A free standing dresser of course. Adverts.ie or donedeal.ie are great for these at a bargain! If you've got the budget, an AGA would really make it look countryish!! I also added tongue and groove cladding on my walls, and as my coutertop splashback, Solid timber worktop, a belfast sink and some open shelves, rather than base and wall cabinets. For the lighting in the kitchen, spotlights with some pendants hanging above the table look great too. Here's some gorgeous lights from Potterybarn, who deliver to IRE.

And for your living room, if you stick to things like: a stone fireplace, with beam and a stove, a natural weave carpet, Linen/cotton sofas, with loads of wool throws and an upholstered ottoman. These give a real rustic cottage/farmhouse feel.

The website Houzz.com (traditional section) and www.housetohome.co.uk are also great for inspiration!

Sorry about the LONG reply, hope this helped!

    Little me.

never buy anything electrical from the states, they run on 110v, have had the world of trouble in the past with lights with inbuilt transformers

Yes you're right Kiernan. I got some gorgeous lights from the states, my husband is an electrician, so he managed to sort them out for me, as they were a bargain!
