Working aboard a yacht?

Just wondering if anyone has experience of working aboard a private yacht? Am thinking of doing some courses and trying to get employment in the future. Just wondering what courses would I need to do and roughly how long do they take? The position I feel I would be suited to would be deckhand, just wondering if anyone could share their experience of what's involved and if its worth applying for this role?
    Thanks

you need to be able to sail / cook / clean depending on how big a boat your going to be working on , pay is normally crap but you have all your meals and board , you go for the life style

Yacht can be anything from a bath tub to a thing a helicopter lands on. Crew for most are not paid - people do it for the criac. You'd be looking more at big super yachts.

If you want to tart around do a yacht masters course (can be done in a year or so from scratch) and lead flotillas out in Greece. You might also try the sailing forum for more specific advice.

Thanks for the replies lads. Not sure where your getting your figures from regarding poor wages, but every job listing site I've checked for deckhand positions the wages are particularly good, minimum I've seen is €2,500 a month. Would you consider this bad? Seems like a very good wage to me seen as you've your board and meals paid for. It's about €625 p/week.

Do you have sailing experience? What is the risk you will throw up 20 minutes out of port?

It might say €2,500, but is that for experienced people with the certification and logs? How much do they deduct for bed and board?
