Sky+ Box issue

Have a sky + box under subscription but 3 years old. Starting to give some problems with losing "sky + functionality". Having to undergo system resets and losing all saved programmes. Happened lastnight for the 3rd time in 2 months.
Sky help desk said if happens again will have to have an engineer call out at a fee of €100. Does this have to be paid? Can we get a new box any cheaper? I know they have a free skyHD box but have to sign up for HD for 1 year which is close to €200 .. and I don't particularly need HD. Any other options?
    Thanks for any help.

    Just to add ..
I phoned Sky this morning. Told them I was thinking of jacking it in altogether .. was told, go ahead. Not offered a bean.

I was just going to suggest that. If you are out of contract just ring them but dont tell them that you're "thinking" of cancelling but go ahead and cancel. Its 30 days notice you have to give and I would be fairly sure that the cancellations dept. will offer a box for €10. I see others posting that they got the same offer recently.

If you didnt want to cancel you could look on Adverts for a new Sky+ HD box. They can be got used or new and the boxes are all HD as standard nowadays. This guy in Waterford sells the new 500gb boxes (no connection btw) for €70 if you buy in shop or €87 delivered. I assume it comes with a 12 month guarantee as opposed to a 3 month guarantee that Sky give on a reconditioned box.

    Thanks for the reply.
If I do go ahead and "cancel" and they call my bluff and offer me nothing .. would I have to pay a reconnection fee?
If I bought a new box from someone other than sky, would it just be as simple as swapping cards, connecting wires and away it goes?

There wont be any reconnection fee or the likes. If you did cancel you would more than likely get made an offer to stay and/or replace the box free or for a nominal charge. If that didnt happen while you were on the phone then they will call you before the cancellation period is up.

It happened to me there on Saturday as I cancelled 2 weeks ago despite the girl giving me an offer at the time.

If you get another box it would take no more than a couple of minutes to swap them and you simply ring Sky to have the card paired with your new box.
