United Airlines US internal flight

    Hoping someone here might know the answer to this. I've booked an internal flight in the US with United Airlines but throughout the booking process there was no option to pay for a checked in bag? From looking at the website I still can't figure out when and how I pay to check in my bag or even how much it costs? Has anyone done this before and know how it works?

    You should have the option to add it if you check in online or at a kiosk.

    Ah cool probably just sort it out at the airport then. I'm so used to Ryanair screwing you if you don't have everything paid before you arrive at the airport that its made me paranoid!

    I've never paid extra for checked luggage in the US, but I haven't been over there in about 5 years so things may have changed...

    Pretty sure you get one checked bag as part of the price with most US carriers (2 with SouthWest).

    Nope. Oh nope. Southwest is now the exception rather than the rule. Unless you have some kind of high tier frequent flyer status, the main airlines will charge for your checked bags domestically.

    Almost certain I didnt pay for checked bags with Delta or United in summer '11... but in fairness thats 18 months ago now.

    Depends - if you booked it as part of an international trip (i.e. Dublin -> New York -> Las Vegas) for example, you wouldn't pay the bag charge on the internal leg as you benefit from the free checked bag on the internal leg.

    If you just book a stand alone internal flight, say NY - Las Vegas, you don't get that (apart from Southwest and jetBlue (who still give one free bag)).

    We did the US west coast last September and took several internal flights mostly with US Air, almost all check ins are now self service with a bag drop and you are asked if you want to check a bag, US air charge $25 per item unless it is included in the ticket price and you can pay by inserting your credit card in the check-in machine,

    We paid for baggage on a few US internal flights in the last couple of years. I think it was $25 per checked bag. We paid for them when we checked in at the kiosk, they ask you how many bags and then you put your credit card into the machine.

    $25 per checked bag is correct. Flew with them last August. You pay at check in.

    Yep I can confirm this, had the flight last month and everything went like clockwork, put Ryanair to shame really.

    They are also not as strict on carry on baggage as Ryanair. The flight I was on had alot of people with medium size suitcases

    Also worth remembering a second checked bag on United will cost you $100, so travel light folks!

    Didn't pay for checked baggage up to 50 lb in weight on united last summer. American Airlines charged for checked baggage. Both of them let us bring two items of carry on each also

If you are taking a connecting flight to an international destination, the international luggage criteria (of one free checked bag of up to 50kg) normally applies to your entire journey, even if the first leg(s) of your trip is within the US. If your trip is 100% domestic, the checked bag fee normally applies.

    If your trip was 100% domestic, I find it hard to believe that you were able to check a 50 kg bag at no charge, unless you were able to avail of some sort of air miles/frequent flyer/up grade perk that gave you that.

    Hey we flew from dublin to Newark with united the allowance was 20 kg. we then flew to Fort Lauderdale also with united the checked baggage was 50 lb as in pounds not kilos! Read my post again. We were not charged for our bags.After a week Carribean Cruise We then flew to Vegas with American Airlines and we had to pay for our bags. If our bags were over 50lb there would have been excess fees. From Vegas we flew on to Newark with united and there was no charge for baggage up to 50lb. Our last flight was united to dublin and we didn't pay for baggage up to 50lb.

    We had separate tickets for all these flights and All of the flights allowed us to carry on two pieces of hand luggage. Baggage allowances are in pounds not kilos in the US !
