    Hi there,

I've just started crocheting and got really interested in Amigurumi. I found very hard to find any information from Ireland (as in I found... not one forum about it) so I thought I'd open a thread here in case there is anyone else out there that is interested in it, has mastered it or is starting and would like to share their knowledge.

One of the hardest things to find (I had assumed It would be very straight forward) was the type of wool to use, as most patterns are from America they usually use worsted weight yarns, and for this type of crochet they recommend cotton instead of acrylic wool. Well it took me ages to figure out where to buy such thing and what I was looking for! (the correct wool, I think, is Aran cotton yarn, not easy to find in a lot of different colors!)

Also the different names for the stitches here and over in the US (I was lucky I had learned using the American names) etc

Well if there is anyone else out there that is interested in this, I'll be looking forward to meet you!

    :)

I'm waiting to get my neighbour to give me a hand as I'm a real beginner but got this book to show her what I wanted to learn.

    Hi Sera,
I only started a month ago, I learned everything from YouTube and I'm still learning everyday a new thing. There is a website called nerdigurumi that has a few tutorials on amigurumi and free patterns that are pretty cool :)

Have a look at Ravelry.com. You must register first but it costs nothing and most patterns are free. When you log in, just key in Amigurumi and you're sorted. There are a lot of different patterns for crochet and even knit amigurumi. There are even forums for discussions. It's an international site so there should be Irish and English participants in the forums. Hope that helps :)

I started making them last year. Unfortunately, it took me a couple of amis to work out the difference between English and American terms :o They were a disaster!
I usually change the yarn and the hook size since I have no idea what worsted weight yarn is and I hate working with wool so I usually use cotton yarn. I don't really mind if they turn out smaller or larger, as long as the bits still fit together. I'm so slow at making them but I'm on my fifth or sixth now and I like to think I'm getting better at them.

Worsted weight is the same as Aran weight.
