Getting IOS 6 onto a 4th Gen IPOD

As the title suggests, junior wants IOS 6 on his IPOD which appears to be on IOS 4.XXX and there does not seem to be a feature on the IPOD to allow it update. I am guessing it has to be done through the PC? Hopefully I do not have to use Itunes.

Any helpful pointers? He is lurking around me as I speak!

You have to use itunes, just connect it and click on ipod in itunes, it should automatically backup before updating but click on backup just to be sure, that will prob take a while depending on content.

When it's done click on update and it will download and install.

Thanks Guil. Backed up everything and the apps.
Not having a happy time with the download, very frustrating in fact. 1st attempted download indicated 51 mins and then over at the end saying connection lost. now on the 2nd attempt and this time it says 2 hours!

is it okay if the Ipod goes in sleep or standby during process?
    Is 2 hours the norm?
